The axe is an Elwell, and I don't think that company exists any more but my recall from my kindle chopping days is that it was superbly balanced and easy to use. No matter now, it will have a comfortable retirement.
I also used to chop kindling for a local farmr when I was a nipper. Railway sleepers from a closed railway line were chopped into logs (Using a belt driven saw powered by a belt from the tractor wheel) then four of us kids sat chopping kindling from them which the farmer toted round the doors. Most people had coal fires in those days and creosote covered sticks really stoked up the fires.

      • No 'stick chopping' today although I still enjoy doing it.

The weather is quite depressing lately so outdoor work apart from dog walking, keeping woodburnr supplied and shopping is about all that gets done outside.

Need to crack on with the tiling in bathroom which gets done in spasms as it such a boring job.

        Take care peeps.

        • Mornin n'alln'all
My blinking car wouldn't start yesterday. It turned over then died.
Battery recharged but it still won't start...pah. Guess that it will cost a fortune to fix...again will keep my fingers crossed though.
Wouldn't surprise me if there is a mouse nesting under the bonnet and it's nibbled through something. (It's happened previously in my hubby's car)

Today I shall be having a break from crafting, so not quite sure what I'll get up to. Pity it's pouring down out there.

See ya later peeps! Enjoy your day.

              • Afternoon the rain stopped so I’ve been out for a stroll instead of gardening, called in a local charity shop and bought a pack of 12 quarter size propagators with lids for a good price. So that’s me happy.

                • Good afternoon all.
Grandson gone home and I am having a well deserved cuppa.
Just been down to the greenhouse.
14degs but everything looks depressing just sitting there.
Lots of bits still in flower but they dont look the same when they're sodden wet.
Enjoy the rest of your evening all.

                  • Evening all.

been another pig of a day. However, been a bit poignant for me. I knew my Dad who died way back in 1991 had served in the army during the last war, that he had been taken prisoner in 1940 and was incarcerated till the end of the war. He never ever told us anything about his war experiences.

Discovered today that he was part of the Highland Regiment 51st Division force (he was in the in the Gordon Highlanders) and 10,000 or so of them were left in France to support the French at the time of the Dunkirk evacuation and that remaining force was eventually forced to surrender.

They were then force marched almost 990kms to Stalag 383 Hoehenfels in Bavaria and apparently were not fed en route but had to scavenge in the fields alongside the roadways. A local historian wrote a book about this a few years back apparently and I have arranged to borrow the book from the local library when it is next returned.

Anyway. he survived the war and lived to a good age and I'll maybe learn a bit more about his time as a prisoner of war when I get my hands of the book which btw is titled "St Valery and its aftermath"

                          No rain here!....yet

More sewing again today, but I need a brew to start the day.
Had a poorly chicken last night, so fingers crossed she's improved when I go to let them out....

I'm just listening to the 7.00 bells-always a joy to hear. When our village bells stop, the ones in the next village start off. Neither of them are on time

The house feels chilly this morning ...might need to get the heating coming on a tad earlier..

Enjoy your day peeps! See ya later

                          • Mornings!
Forecast thunderstorms didn't arrive (or I slept through them, which is unlikely) but we have had a lot of rain. The front path and back yard are both an inch or so underwater I'll not bother getting a paper today, unless it drains away quickly - Mollycat looked out then went back to bed, can't say I blame her

Domestics today and another batch of festive marmalade, if I get round to it..

                            Have a good'un

                            • Morning all.

That looks a fascinating website, VC. Thinking of you, AP.

Meanwhile, bit of a hazy sky out there and distinctly chilly. No builders today, but at least he phoned to let us know. I might get a bit more of my own work done seeing as I won't be going out every now and then to view the progress.

Lots to do, including bread to get on the go. Wood delivery coming later this week, so feel like I can afford to splash out and burn some today. My improve-my-breadmaking mission for this winter is progressing quite well. Mr Snoop very happy with that.

Catch you later, guys. Have a great day, whatever the weather.

                              • I made the Yorkshire pud in our woodstove last night Snoop. Things seem to cook differently in there.
It was wonderful and crisp on the outside and lovely and moist in the middle-just as I like them.
Funny thing is I you either like them like that or prefer them hard and crunchy like my mom always made.

OH prefers to make his bread in there too.
