  • Dreams versus reality - in the garden!

In my dreams I have a picture of my garden as it will be one day, some day, next year, who knows when, maybe never. .
Its a garden that I can wander around, picking and plucking, nibbling as I go and return to the kitchen with a basket full of edibles.
The air is full of the scent of various flowers and herbs and I pick a bunch for the house.
The fences are covered with edible climbing plants, fruit bushes or flowers. The fruit trees are blossom covered in spring and heavy with fruit in autumn.
There are no straight lines, the weed-free paths meander between beds, all luxuriantly filled with plants of all types and uses.
Birds, bees and butterflies are my companions on my walk (and none of them are pests, of course).
Naturally, the sun is shining and all is right in my world.

The reality is quite different, weeds, rain, pests, they're all around me, but deep down, in my heart, I don't see them, because my garden is just like the one in my dreams!

How does your garden/plot compare to your dreams?

My back garden is way too small to meet any of my expectations in my dreams, but it's got all the elements of my dream garden, just on a smaller scale It brings me so much joy, and now that I have an allotment again, more of my back garden will be allowed flowers, because more recently, they bring me joy too!

I'm always planning something to make my garden 'better' sometimes the plans come to nothing, sometimes they don't make any difference - but just once in a while the plan does work just as I thought, it's all worthwhile then

The 'trouble' I find is that the ever changeable weather means things flower earlier, or later, than they should, and the effect is lost. Sometimes something that looked beautiful in the book/on the programme, just doesn't work in my garden

I still keep trying though...sometimes I spend more time dreaming up ideas but not enough time mowing the grass

And that's exactly what life is about! Dream the dreams and less attention to the chores

Like Sariss my garden is also much smaller than I would like.
Having said that I get to add a little of most things.
Just to taste the fruit and veg and smell the flowers let's me dream of what it would be like if it were bigger.
Having said that it has given me a life time of pleasure.
And, in spite of it's small size it is still giving me the opportunity to try new things.
It's my little piece of heaven.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

My problem is that in my dream garden, nothing is ever at the growing phase or just on the turn or bolting. It's all at the harvesting stage all at the same time. So I see Brussels sprouts ready to pick alongside sweetcorn. Tomatoes and savoy cabbage. Not possible, of course.

And I do spend far too much time dreaming and pondering when I could be actually doing something.

One thing I've decided this year is to grow more flowers and herbs in among my veg. I'm hoping that will bring me some joy too.

I really do love growing things, regardless.

In my dreams things make more of an impact. There is a lot to be said for small gardens. One house I lived at had a pokey path down the side but had random shrubby type plants that when it rained it agitated the scent of flowers and it was gorgeous.
