  • Good books?

Hi all, I'm fed up because the book I have to read is rubbish. I am bereft.

Finished Paula Spencer by Roddy Doyle last night, really good. Previous to that, I loved Atonement (anyone seen the fillum yet?)

Any recommendations for a good read for these dark autumn nights (while OH is watching stoopid reality chef celebrity cooking programmes)

I liked Atonement Two-Sheds, read it on holiday a couple of years back and couldn't get the book out of my head for a week or two afterwards. If you haven't read it already, try Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.

I tried reading those yoan last year took some getting into book 1 and then my daughter nicked them to go to Uni with so I never did get to book 2. They were going to do a film of them I think.

Depending on your tast someof my favourites are

One man and his Bog by Barry Pilton - tales of the pennine way
500 miles walkies by Mark Wallington - some unsuspecting fool takes on the south west coast past with a borrowed dog ( that suffers flatulence ) (I used to do a lot of walking so like these)

Failing that anything by Tom Sharpe is good. The others by Dan brown aren't bad either. ( angels & demons, Digital fortress & deception point)

I too liked Martina Cole but her books become a little 'same old same old' after a couple.

My favourite book is "Black Cabs" by John McLaren, a very good thriller.

I've read all Jeffrey Archer (except prison stuff), the best book being "As the Crow Flies" - incredible read and would recommend all his books.

Anything by Terry Pratchett - always good for a real laugh. Tom Clancy - good thrillers. Pride and Prejudice, absolutely love it. I also revisit childhood books - Coral Island, the Just William books, things like that.

I'm an addict of the Patricia Cornwall Kay Scarletta Novels. A bit gruesome at times, but I'm beginning to know alot about forensic science!

Secret Hunters by Ralulph Fiennes is an eye opener, for something more lighthearted Patricia Cornwell, Jeffrey Deaver types, also Minette Walters (brill!) Anne Rice and Terry P - bit of alsorts really for me!

Just read The Conjuror's Bird by Martin Davies. Very well written. Also My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Read them for our book group but I'd really recommend them to anyone.

                        Hi

If you like Roddy Doyle, you'll probs like Tony Parsons and Ben Elton.
Also the Lian Hearn books are really good, starting with "across the nightingale floor" love them!
