You're right. But when he took out the policy he wasn't driving to work. When he started to commute a couple of years later, it never occurred to him that he wasn't covered. It's been a costly lesson: the balance on the old car; breakdown; garage costs; repair to farmer's fence; taxis to work; a new car.

But at least he is here, unharmed. And at least the useless car (only 5 years old) has totalled itself without hurting anyone ... it really was a heap of junk: the windows fell out, the doors dropped, brakes failed once; the inside of the door fell off; and the airbag didn't work when he crashed. It all could've been much worse.

Suggest he buys either a pushbike or a small tank!! Volkswagens are good, they are built like tanks - And check the insurance policy.

Ran into this when I got my dream car earlier this year, it was around £7.00 extra to cover commuting.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

I know! So why don't they tell you when you take out the policy? Is it just a ruse to get you to be under-insured?

I find this gob smacking. I am so sorry for you- although I thank you for drawing it to my attention.

Our policies say SDP+ personal business.

Although it might seem amazing and unfashionable to some folk: I use a broker for all my insurance. This means that ultimately I cannot change provider each year -which is the best way to get the cheapest cover-there are no rewards for loyalty with ins providers. However the brokers have had 20 years of valued custom from me: know me and my circumstances; and will always challenge the premium automatically now (i'll usually get at least 15% off the quote.) BUT...I never have to deal with the provider and thus It has been entirely stress free- this is SO worth it. They have far more leverage and patience with these leeches than little ol' me and there seems to be less weaseling out of things. I also find that if/when I do ever check the small print there are less surprises.

It may not work for you all but it seems to help me. I just don't have the time to shop around or trust myself to fully comprehend the true implications of choosing a seemingly 'bargin' premiums.

Why do you think these on-line quotes are so cheap......its because you are getting less cover. simple as that.

Its not down to them to tell you.....its up to you to tell them. Have you told them of your tow bar?

Have one fitted and don't tell them or buy a S/H car with one and your insurance could be invalid as it is a change to the manufactures spec.

On my policy for towing a trailer there was no extra charge.

I can't get an online quote. I have great difficulty insuring my car as it is considered a 'hot hatch' and very stealable. After much discussion some years back, I finally found a company willing to offer 'classic car insurance' if I drive less than 3000 miles a year. My darned car is 22 years old - how can it be knickable!!!!!
