I have to say having been a member of most of the forums on the gardening web, that this is way ahead of the others for friendly and useful help, some folk seem to think forums are their personal vehicle, non of that here and I have been a member for a fair old time now and seen all sorts come and go. Magazines are a personal taste, some you take, some you leave, but this grapevine is well worth a visit and it's freeeee.

      Hello CtM. We haven’t met.
Anyhow, it’s sad that the Mods aren’t supported as between a (what I think) a mag that could be fabulous, encoreging, trail blazing etc and a Forum that did have and could still be world class (look at the membership numbers) the powers that increasingly aren’t but more importantly US can really help change lives, attitudes, abilities and just maybe world.

It’s always the people that ‘make’ whether it’s the mag or the Vine.
We on here learn to care, not just about our crops but about each other.

Sadly, due to whatever this Forum has changed.
Every Christmas I relied on the GR as I’m essentially on my own. I relied on tips for small space growing because I’ve got a tee by garden.
I relied on you lot for many different reasons. I think others have as well but I’m the only one with the trunk to admit ir.

Lumpy, I don't think the Forum has changed materially.
We may not have the VVS but there are other competition threads - like Sunflowers, Trombas, and fun things - and photo threads for flowers and garden calendars to show others what you've done and are proud of (or embarrassed by!).
The seed swaps are going strong and for those who don't grow much I've started a Random seed swap that will be back next year - so start looking out those odds and ends of seeds in readiness.

Everyone who posts or asks a question seems to get a friendly reply, even if you get differing advice at least you get replies to choose between
If you want a discussion thread then start one about something you're interested in/anything really, and everybody will join in, the threads don't have to make sense Good job really or I wouldn't be answering anything HaHa!

This is an interesting thread, though I am sad to see you take your leave Lumpy. I will miss you and always hope for your return.

I respect your opinion that the forums have changed, and I don't doubt that they have. The last few years have been tumultuous for this country, and the mood in the nation has definitely changed. It'd be unrealistic to think that this wonderful forum isn't affected by each and every member that visit it.

On a personal level, I can honestly say this forum has helped to keep me sane over the last couple of years, which have been very, very difficult to get through, at the same time some very positive changes too. This forum even brought me back in touch with my family back in Sweden

I haven't been a member here for all that long, but I absolutely adore how friendly, supportive, funny and diverse in opinion, yet respectful we are with each other. I love that this forum encourages doing things on a shoe string, how to recycle and refurbish and how to be organic as well as how not to be - it's all adding to a wonderful mix of choice and it gives me a warm feeling of belonging, no matter how I choose to garden, or how much money I can, and choose, to spend on gardening. Rest assured this is the only gardening forum that I have found that is like that.

                Lots of green love xx

You sound like you are disappearing I haven't been active of late except to bang my seedy drum, but it is not through any fault of the vine. Anyhoo the point is I just wanted to give you mass virtual hugs if you do disappear and hope for a speedy, happy, healthy return.

Why not? You usually get back what you put in, same as with everything in life. If you can't be bothered it encourages others not to respond.

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Don’t worry the lumpy will be back. This is the 3rd time she’s left .

Lumpy stop ****ing about and come and play .

Yes you’re absolutely right the vine has changed since we joined. Why? Because we have changed. It’s just the natural ebb & flow of life. Some has been good, some has been absolute Hell. I know I’m a different person now than when I join the vine 5 years ago, which has changed how I interact with it. But I’ve no intention of leaving ( sorry to disappoint ). Like you the other members of the vine have helped me more than they will ever know through the rough patches of life. Like VC said I’ve met a lot of people on here I’ll probably never meet for real but I consider them friends.
Things change. That’s all there is to it.

Yes, the Vine has changed. But that's because people move on or change and expectations of forums alter, not least legally and financially.

I miss your contributions, Lumpy. And yours, Cadalot. If people like you go, then it's bound to have an impact.

I'm not very sure what to say. In some respects, Lumpy, I agree with you, but for different reasons. My impression, unlike yours, is that there's more chit-chat and less gardening, if that makes sense. Either that, or those are the threads I look out for more. Either way, there are people on here with whom I might disagree on some issues in the real world, but on here we maintain, for the most part, a very friendly and civilised conversation. Coming here rather than looking through the papers online or trawling through Facebook is a relief. Even Mr Snoop refers to you all as my 'allotment friends'.

I also acknowledge that this forum is free to use but it isn't free to supply. I don't subscribe to the magazine (the problems another reader in Spain had in receiving her copies rather put me off, plus foreign subscriptions are expensive and you don't get the seeds or other free gifts) and I have an ad blocker in place. Essentially I'm a freeloader. So I can't really complain.

I am also very grateful to the mods. It's a miserable task and I had no idea you received no back-up from the mag. That makes it doubly difficult.

Everyone is free to come and go as they please. But I would miss your contributions, Lumpy Sue, if you were to leave permanently. If you think the forum has changed for the worse, then help to keep us on track if you have the time and energy. Otherwise, just jump in as and where you can or want to.

Best wishes to you and Cadalot, and of course to everyone else.

Apparently I have adverts on my blog, and admin were asked to have a whisper in my shell like, and I was asked not to link.
I actually find your post rather offensive. Mods try to keep the forum in order ensuring that the forum rules are followed.
I'm amazed that you feel the need to walk over something so trivial, but if that's the way you feel I wish you well in your search for better forums. Good Luck!

Some thoughts from a new(ish) grape.

When I started here I learned a lot, a steep learning curve as they say. For my own current needs the amount and rate at which I can learn has diminished but the amount I can help has increased. This changes the way I might interact. I am well aware that gardening is a continual learning process.
In real life I like to think of myself as humourous and witty, my interactions here tend to be snapped during quite phases in the day job. Early retirement is planned and that will change my interactions again.
So as I (We) evolve our relationship it will change. The effect of lots of people going through a similar process may well be palpable.
My other hobbies have me interacting on other forums, some of which I no longer frequent because they no longer have much to give me or my interests have changed. In all cases I stick around as much for the banter and commeraderie as for the in depth knowledge.
In terms of gerdening, I see techniques changing for the benefot of the environment. Few people still garden the way the victorians did (although they had some cracking techniques). The ideas of environmentally sensitive growing (i.e. no single use plastic), and water retentive soil management are becoming more mainstream. For some of us they may be critical to being able to garden at all one day soon!
Not sure I've contributed much to this thread, but I hope folks stick around and contribute in thier own way.

                              Sending good vibes to everyone.
