Do you think the Vine has changed?

VC, I left the same forum because quite a number of decent and morally-minded people were banned at the same time on grounds that really were unconscionable.

Anyhow, the Vine is a largely tolerant and friendly sort of place. Lots of knowledgeable grapes who are more than happy to share their knowledge/experience. Its an evolving forum I'd say, as people come and go. Mods are pretty good too - its a pretty thankless task I'd imagine. Its still one of my favourite places on the web.

Deep breaths everyone. It is a shame that people feel that they don't get out of the vine want they want or need and there may be other places that are better suited for them at this point. The one thing I love about the vine is that (most of the time) you can come back when you want and there is someone to greet you.

Think why you like it here? Don't make me pull out the reasons to lurve the vine thread

Snoop, I know Cadalot wasn't the only one who moved across and I'm aware of some of the circumstances. I'm sorry it happened but you were all welcome here, whatever the circumstances.
There have been Banned Grapes who have travelled in the opposite direction - I hope they had a similar welcome!

In my view, its fine to join another forum or be a member of several, but there's no need to insult the Moderators and Members of this one by implying that we don't even say Good Morning. My Mum would say "Don't bite the hand that feeds you".

Couple of things, some nice comments supporting the forum and the mods, for my part can I say that it is not a chore doing the job, if it was I wouldn't do it, it takes a fair bit of your time, but I happen to enjoy reading what the grapes are up to and both learn and offer opinion/advice as I see fit. The work behind the scenes keeping the spammers at bay and editing the norty words is really not too onerous. So lets have folk posting their gardening comments and questions, we like problems and photos too, remember to be kind and most importantly remember to enjoy growing, whatever you choose to grow.

Can I say that forums have rules, what's allowed and what's not, mostly you tick a box to say that you've read and will abide by those rules. If you don't you'll get asked to behave. If that doesn't work you may get banned, it's how things work.
Mods don't decide to do things off the top of their heads, the forum Admin will tell them what to do, what rules to enforce etc.
Without Mods working behind the scenes forums in general can be unpleasant places, so we should all appreciate their unpaid work. The ones on here have always seemed friendly - but then I'm not one to break any rules.
So a big thank you to the Mods for keeping us free of spam and abusive posts

I actually find your post rather offensive. Mods try to keep the forum in order ensuring that the forum rules are followed.
I'm amazed that you feel the need to walk over something so trivial, but if that's the way you feel I wish you well in your search for better forums. Good Luck!

Ummm Not sure why you find it offensive, I have a great deal of respect for the mods, and it was done and received in a friendly way. (I can't recall which mod it was that was instructed to have words with me) The forum is off the back off Grow Your Own magazine and it gets funded by annoying adverts but that's the price one pays if your not going to fund it yourself.

I just made the point that I was not in competition with the forum just linking to articles that gave an in depth answer to common questions. As it happens I now float around a number of forums and I have found a nice one that has the same fell that this one had previously and I spend more time there thats all. Does not mean I don't want to lurk and contribute here once in a while. In fact I'm just about to send in my Tomato seed circle contribution and I have my flower seeds drying and once done they will be sent in.

Sorry if I caused you distress VC, yep a lot has happened to myself and my family since I used to pop in daily, including, many visit to hospitals for the wife and myself, death of my brother-in-law and the marriage of my eldest daughter. The giving up of one allotment on my second site and the taking on of the allotment next door on my first site and plot.

There was no sufferance a whole bunch of us came here at the same time because of an overzealous Moderator on another forum. It was here that we found that Mods can be good and reasonable, and I don't think that has changed at all.

Yes like you Lumpy I think the Vine had changed, its not as free as it used to be (and no VC I am not talking financial) but I think that has been caused by the way society had changed, my personal opinion is that we have all become too politically correct and take offence at what others say, we should try to remember that we are all Jock Thamson's bairns and as such we like all families will have different opinions, so treat each other with respect and as gardeners remember that out of a group of a thousand there will be a thousand different was of gardening (though mine will be in he right way). But in saying all that I still find the Vine an enjoyable forum to come onto if I have a gardening problem I know I will get a solution simply by asking and yes I know most of my involvement is on the social side but to me that is what gardening is about

I don’t feel like the vines changed except you haven’t been here Lumpy & we’ve missed you & your posts! I think when sad things affect us we do feel different & look at things differently. You have a lot of friends here,we’re all the same people just going through different things in our lives that affect how we come across. I think it’s good to be amongst people that genuinely care about you,somewhere to come to,to get away from it all & be with friends. I hope we see you again maybe everyday or something? xx
