Its been very cold in the garden today and most of the Farmers have stayed indoors. I popped down to see Charlie Chive who is usually on his plot, whatever the weather, although you wouldn't think so by looking at it. He doesn't seem to do much work on it!
Charlie has, shall we be kind?, "odd" ideas about farming - actually, he has odd ideas about a lot of things. He's convinced that there is a market for Persimmons and Quince and that given a few years, his trees will be laden with exotic fruit that he will sell at a premium in the Shop. Even after 2 fruitless years, he hasn't given up hope.
Look at these apples, Charlie says. If I can grow these, I can grow Persimmons. Many years ago he had a Siamese cat called Persimmon, that used to go for walks with him in the woods and for trips to the seaside to play on the sand. If a cat can do that, I can grow Persimmons, he says, repeatedly.
Say it often enough and you will believe anything!
As ever, I came home with a couple of Charlie's scrumptious red apples and my head full of dreams of cats and sand castles.

Had a message this morning from Tom and Tilly who share a plot at the end of the garden.
"Come down and see us - urgent!".
They've been growing tomatillos for the Little Shop and some chard and kale, most of which has been eaten by Mrs Brown and her cousins.
Why the urgency? The tomatillos were looking a bit dejected after the cold nights and Tom and Tilly were having a closing down sale - Take all you want, Free!
Many of the farmers hate this time of year, their crops coming to an end, but not Tom and Tilly, they were skipping about with ear-to ear grins, singing "La Bamba".
You've guessed - they're flying off to Mexico for the winter for some sunshine and Tequila and, despite their protestations, we all know they're not going just to buy more seeds.

Went to see Joan today. Joan lives in her own little house at the end of the garden where she grows the most delicious raspberries. On a cold morning, these raspberries taste like mini- raspberry icelollies. Pop one in your mouth and feel it thaw and release all its delicate raspberryness. Such a treat to start the day.
Sun-ripened or frosted, they're always a pleasure to eat.
