Our firefighters are amazing. They're a largely volunteer force and they do this year in year out. We would be absolutely lost without them.

The forecast winds are late. Unfortunately that is probably only going to timeshift the danger period rather than reduce it substantially.

It has been a long day.

Somehow NSW managed to get through today with only 12 properties damaged and no loss of life. It was an extraordinary feat given the sheer number of fires in absolute terms as well as the number which were at emergency level.

The danger for us is pretty much over until the next time. The cold front has come through here now, and although the wind change creates some danger, that is offset by the much lower temperatures and the increased humidity.

Some areas further north will continue to be at high risk into tomorrow.

My plants all survived today surprisingly well, which was a bonus.

Thank you everyone for your concern and good wishes.

My son lived in NT for 10 years don’t think he ever experienced the fires, he certainly had his share of hurricanes and the likes from the photos and videos he sent us.

Still thinking of you and your family and all the volunteer rescue services

The NT doesn't get much in the way of fires due to a lack of vegetation, and especially forests. Cyclones are more their thing.

There are still a lot of fires burning, so the fire crews don't really get much rest. The last week has been the first big emergency of the season, but they've been fighting fires for 10 weeks now on a lesser scale.

Conditions on the ground are such that we're set for one of the worst bushfire seasons in recent history. The wild card is the weather. Right now the predictions are that summer will be hotter and drier than normal, which will only increase the risk of a catastrophic fire season. But we shall see.

Glad to hear things have at least calmed down a bit for you lolie.
I'd never truely put myself in the mindframe of how things would pan out if I were living through your situation.
It certainly puts things into perspective knowing everything you own could be taken away from you. Presumably you have a 'grab bag' of the material things most precious to you and documents which need saving?

Yes, although that's more in case I ever have a house fire. I'm not in a location where I'll ever be in the path of a bushfire without at least a little warning.

Not heard from lolie for a while.
I hope the fires aren't affecting her too much. I hear on the news that things are getting worse over there
