Hi there, just got back from a trip to the UK and spotted this thread.
Hope your FIL makes a speedy recovery.
One piece of advice I can offer ( having lost two 90+ yr old close relatives in the last couple of years..and one very frail one with very active cancer still living at home) is that if he is as indépendant as my relatives then do make a point of suggesting that these adjustments to the home are temporary until he is back to coping properly again.
Psychologically , it's a goal to improve as well as being less of a perceived 'insult' by publicly pointing out any 'inadequacies'
Speedy recovery nick...Just tell him he didn't need to go to such extreme measures to get out of washing up over the festive period!!!

I absolutely agree with all of the above. I liked the way our local hospital stressed that all the living aids were on loan to my sister-in-law. To be returned when she didn't need them any more. I've found the worst thing when elderly relatives are ill is making sure they don't start to feel isolated and trying to get back to some kind of normality as quickly as possible. A year ago while recovering from 8 broken ribs and feeling down my husband (age 90) was even muttering about giving up the allotments. However as soon as he started going there again he began to improve.

Thanks for that good tip for those who are in a similar boat - I try to let Dad do things he can do himself without inferring, but what he can do has got progressively less and less over the years

He worked a lot of his early life in coal mines in Kazakhstan in the region of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site which has impacted his health. Under the Soviet USSR system workers in these places got extra money - it was tempting so he moved there for the money, and in fact Irina although Lithuanian was born in Kazakhstan - she was educated under the Soviet system which of course means she speaks Russian as a native language as well as Lithuanian and she can understand Polish OK too.

Good news this time - Dad was able to sit up a little on his bed yesterday and appears more comfortable according to Irina - he is also eating and drinking and has his mind back in gear. I'm planning on popping in to see him myself this lunchtime :-)

Glad to see your FIL is doing well. A very worrying time!

Falls - trips and hazards. Rugs, slippers, trailing cables, trailing bed-spreads, curtains etc. Does his footwear fit properly and not flop? Does he need some low-level lighting for safe trips to the loo at night?
Medication - if he's on medication, get his GP to review it to check it's not causing dizziness or low blood pressure.
Ask GP or hosp if there are any strength and balance groups/falls groups locally for him to learn some exercises to help build his strength, but also to help his vestibular system cope with minor losses of balance better.

              :-)

Just to let everyone know that my F-i-L was moved to Ross Cottage hospital and is making slow but consistent progress, he can now take a few steps with a walking frame. We're not sure if he'll be back here by Xmas but the main thing is that as long as he can continue to improve a bit then he will be back home in the end.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and good wishes - stay safe everyone over the hols and Merry Xmas.

Glad to hear he's continuing to improve, Nick. Sorry about Christmas, but if things are looking better long term, then that's positive.

Best wishes to you all for the festive season.

Thanks for the update Nick, it sounds like your F-i-L is improving so hopefully he'll soon be back home with you both.

Good news as dad is back here at the Cottage today - he has made a little progress getting mobile again, so its fingers-crossed that this will continue.

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes - and go very steadily outside, as its slippery as anything with all the rain we've been having.
