  • What were the most useful things that you learned at school?

I was chatting to a young female relative about soldering something. "Oh, we learned how to solder at school", she said. I am so happy that eventually there is equality. When I was at school we girls were taught Domestic Science. No woodwork or metalwork just cookery and sewing in which, at the time, I had no interest. It was many years later when I was eventually let loose with power tools.
What, I wondered, were the things I'm glad I learned at school.
Languages were one. French, German and Latin which then helped with others languages and broadened my very limited horizons.
How to wire up a plug in probably my first physics lesson. Very useful.
Maths. I hate to admit this but when I wanted to work out angles to cut wood to redeck a boat I dredged up some old facts from the dim and distant past. It worked.
Most of the other useless information I learned, particularly history I would still consider useless.
What were the most useful things everyone else learned?

You asked "What were the most useful things that you learned at school?" so I was answering for me, not you.

to daydream and draw well in noisy company at my first school - making slides on winter ice in the school playground is a rare happy memory

I hated primary school for the most part - mainly bored and often scared.

My mother taught me to read fortunately, and after I went to grammar school things improved

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

As much as I dislike saying it, I also think reading was the best thing I learned from school, I read a lot when I was younger and I still do, at school I loved taking part in sport, though I am not a good spectator, most of my learning came after school when I started work, I worked with a lot of men who left school at 14 and the knowledge that they possessed was phenomenal, and most of it came from books

I learnt to read before I went to school, and when I did start I had the best part of the second year off with various childhood diseases (Mumps, Measles, Whooping Cough, Chickenpox). I hated Domestic Science at the time but it did teach me the basics of cookery which has held me in good stead since. Other than that algebra, languages and art. Drawing calms me in stressful times although when I was married it could cause the stress as my husband regarded it as me being lazy.

Eventually I learnt to keep quiet or else I'd be in trouble again!
Because, despite being continually compared unfavourably with my elder sister, I got into Grammar school and she didn't - it was just that she was a quiet child and I was always asking questions, particularly WHY - do you say that, why does that happen, why should I do that? etc
Latin seemed the perfect starter for other languages, yet still German made no sense at all. That was also before I tried to learn some Greek
Needlework in home economics, I'm still sewing all these years later.
Maths were a mixed blessing, basic Arithmetic and Geometry were ok but I struggled with Algebra.
Loved English language and English Literature, we studied Jane Austen and I still read her novels, plus a lot besides. I always say you can do anything you want if you can read a manual, especially one with pictures. Nowadays everyone looks at youtube lol
Biology was good, at the time I wanted to be a Biology teacher, but I wasn't allowed to take Physics at GCE level because my higher maths results weren't good enough. Now, I don't think I would have liked the job anyway, we just had an inspirational teacher at the time.
It's funny when you look back at schooldays, isn't it
