Funnily enough I started some off at the weekend, it's at that stage when it smells really funky, but it's quite bubbly - so I'll carry on feeding it and hope the smell goes away as it ages..

        • Does it take up a lot of flour though? It's difficult to get flour now

          • Hope it turns out for you ,i was very lucky to get some plain flour last week, the draw back was,5 large bags in a group, got from costco,i also was very lucky to get some baking powder from another place,i thought,if i have to have,is better than none, plus i can share if required,so muck handier the plane than SR,will see if i can get some more stork when i get milk, then i can always bake things for the freezer,i thought it better to freeze any sponge cakes without the filling, just slice in half ready, then fill fresh from frozen,as i find any butter cream goes very sugary, not so nice.

I suppose you use about 500g over the week, so not worth if you haven't got much flour. If that's the case you'd probably be better off making soda bread or plain scone rounds ...

              • I have looked at soda bread Thelma and will try it We don't eat a lot of bread, but it's usually there if we want it. Funny how you miss what you can't have

                • Sourdough takes a fair bit of flour at first but you can use the discards in scones, pancakes, bread sticks or to make crackers. Mines been going for a few years so it just gets fed once a week and left in the fridge in between.

                      • Good morning not as bright today as there is a lot of high cloud cover so hopefully it will stay dry, have decided to have a lazy day today, as I was awake several times through the night with OH having fit's of coughing, but it's not caused by the virus as when she eventually built up her pillows it eased off, but every time she stirred I woke up, so I am just going to be like a housewife today and just sit about reading and watching tv enjoy the day and stay safe
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                        • Morning, all.

Perishing cold out there and very wet again. The snow is off, apparently, just another 90 litres/mm of rain between now and Thursday. Goodness only knows where it's going to go. The valley floor is under a good 10 cm of water already, more in places.

I know we've got a sourdough thread, do we have an ordinary bread one? I've just checked and can find a few bread-related threads but nothing for just sharing bread recipes. What do you reckon? Should we start one? I make bread using very little yeast, for example, a combination of recipes and methods with a bit of tweaking of my own.

Very fidgety today but need to settle down to work. Nothing doing outside in this weather, that's for sure.

Catch you later, guys. Have a good one, meanwhile.

                          • Morning all, had a long lie as I was awake half the night! Kindle is great because I can read in dark and it doesn’t disturb OH who sleeps like a log no matter what!!
Trying to force myself out of bed but...yawn!!
Have a great day everyone, stay safe!!

It looks beautiful out there right now, but it's really not warm, except in the greenhouse. So guess that's where I'll be most of the day, just pottering or reading - works for me

Have a good'un and take care
