On seeing the photograph my first thoughts were of a canal but can't make out any towpath and the framing to the right again to me looks more like a fence post, and you are right as far as VC is concerned the camera is relatively newit may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I’m inclined to agree with Scottish or Canadian port, however, it also reminds me of some of the small ports in Co. Down & Co. Antrim on the east coast of Northern Ireland, fits in with the hills, however the building to the ring with all the windows, what is this ?, is it possible to scan the photos into 4 more higher resolution photos, focusing on some of the building features and harbour features ?.

I think its Mallaig too.
There's a building that looks like a ?church with a steeply pitched roof up on the slope behind the harbour buildings, near trees, in both pics.
Found this image where the hilltops looks similar.

More old photos of Mallaig at https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...ture=emb_title
I think you and Bob should go there and take a photo from the same position - a then and now image.
