Raised Bed Soil Mix

Hi, first post on the forum. In the process of bolting together four rhino metal raised beds in clay grey to match the greenhouse. Just looking for advise on best mix of bagged soils to use for growing vegetables (Brassicas, Onions, Garlic, Lettuce, Pak Choi etc). Thank you.

I bought a few 1 tonne bags of conditioned soil for my raised beds in the poly tunnel it was a mix of topsoil gardening grit and compost, it has proved very successful

two are 180 cm x 60 cm x 20 cm and two are 180 cm x 180 cm x 40 cm.

If I was filling beds I would get some soil, compost and course sand and mix it all together, the soil would be the main ingredient and once you have the beds scatter some blood, fish and bone over the bed and hoe it in and then let the bed settle for about a week, if the level drops too much for you make it up with soil and compost mix

If the raised beds are these type I’d use multi purpose compost,find a good deal like 3 for 2,these are like containers rather than a raised bed on soil?

Yes that's them, would you do a mix of multipurpose and top soil?

You could mix some top soil with multi purpose compost,the textures different composts lighter,does topsoil hold water longer? Perlite would help aeration in containers. I’ve only used topsoil once (mixed with a bag of MPC) when I was filling a raised bed already on the soil,but other people make their own potting mixes. Large stones help at the bottom so the holes don’t get blocked & to help drainage. They look really nice beds

I filled my raised beds with ton bags of topsoil which had 30% compost. You need a lot more than you might think
