Modern record players help

I wanted and have tried to buy a Dansette record player with a Garrard deck. We'll skip the reason why for now.

My eldest gave me a modern "suitcase" player for Christmas. It's really lovely of him but it's driving me nuts. It's running marginally too slowly. Just enough to make my teeth set on edge.

The manual that came with it gave all the instructions to use it which were so basic as to be useless. There are no troubleshooting instructions. One thing it did say that to oil it occasionally with light machine oil. When I took the table off to see if I could find a regulator I found that the "oil" that was used by the manufacturer resembled lard. I removed as much as I could and used the machine oil for my sewing machine on it. It improved the speed, but not enough.

I've tried Googling this problem but with no success so if anyone here has any advice I would be eternally grateful. I do not want to go back to my lovely son and tell him that the machine is unlistenable to.

Just a thought...is it 230v 50Hz compatable?

If not that might affect the speed.

My Technics deck is belt driven and they can slip if oil gets in the wrong places, is yours a belt drive?

My daughter has one of those suitcase players.
Looks very retro, but its utter rubbish.

Hers is much the same, it plays too slow.
I can't even listen to it.

Makes a nice ornament, but that's as far as it goes.

If not that might affect the speed.

If it needs 60Hz then get a foreign inverter somewhere that uses that frequency and run it off a 12V battery . Won't take much power.

There's an SP 25 somewhere in my loft. Left by previous home owner.

There are quite a few on ebay.

It is belt driven. There's no oil on the belt, however, the spindle that drives the belt is very small and looks as if it's made of brass so the belt may be slipping on that.

Power wise, it has a switching adapter that says "Input:100-240v~50/60Hz. Output:5v---1000Ma

Have you googled for reviews of this record player? Maybe its a known problem and there's a fix for it?

Cheap decks rarely play well.

The only reviews I can find suggest that it shouldn't be touched with a bargepole. There is no advice as to how to fix the problem.

It's a Denver VPL-120.
