  • The CLOURER and other nutty "inventions" ;)

A thread for Inventions that you never knew you needed until you've read about them and, when you have, you're positive.

Allow me to introduce one I invented earlier!

The Clourer - a catchy name for a Cabbage Leaf Scourer.

    Requirements:-
The outer leaf of a cabbage (savoy) destined for the chickens
A chopping board covered in bread crumbs and tomato seeds and juice after the preparation of tomatoes on toast.

    The Problem to be overcome
Washing the chopping board will add crumbs and pips to the washing up water and ultimately, down the plug hole
The Chooks could eat the crumbs & pips if they were removed from the board

    The Solution
    The Clourer
A scrunched up cabbage leaf wiped over the board will absorb the crumbs and pips and can be fed to the chooks

    Result.
Happy Chooks, cleanish board and free running plug hole.

Please share you "nutty" inventions. Mocking welcomed.

You use the same chopping board for tomatoes AND for bread!

If I didn't use the correct color coded board from the extensive spectrum available here I would be in danger of having my nose tweaked.

I don't know why you don't cut out the middle man and put the board straight into the chicken run, since you clearly have well developed immunity against food poisoning.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

haha I use the same chopping boards for tomatoes, bread, onion, meat, cake everything. Never meat at the same time as the others, unless last... and no savoury stuff mixed with, nor followed by, cake either. They all go in the dishwasher though, and I've not died yet

VC, I have a chicken pot on my counter where I put all the 'bits' that my chicken would like, and every day or other day, she gets the contents. It's always a joyous occasion for her lol

I hereby invent a rotating greenhouse, sitting on a stout pivot and driven by a clockwork (green, see, green - I can do it) motor, so it always faces south in the spring. By changing the gearing it can always face north in hot weather.

Will it have a huge key to wind the mechanism?
Why not power it with a solar panel?

Joking aside, I visited a friend's family who live on an island off the coast of Vancouver. They built their house on the base of a crane and the whole house could revolve to face the sun and always look out at the sea. It was amazing!
They'd had to allow for all the water and waste systems to cope with the movement of the house.
They powered up the "house" and moved it for us, while we were there. Magical.

My sister lives on Vancouver island and used to live in Kamloops B.C. where a wealthy lawyer built a house on an island with a swimming pool in the basement. Each of the bedrooms had a extra door which opened on to a shoot that you could slide down into the pool, Canadians huh!

I worked in Vancouver for a bit and I could live there. It really is one of the great cities of the world. Anywhere where you can ski and surf in the same day has got to be on the list. And when you give hitch-hikers a lift - they drive (at least in my experience). What is not to like?

I loved Vancouver too, but it was way back in the 80's when I was there.
Chopping boards.....Yes I have a selection (colour coded). I do keep one for fish, one for fresh meat and one for veg/ bread. (Several spares as well) Chicken however never touches any of them. It goes straight from pack to roasting tin/pan with the help of disposable gloves and tongs. (Galloping paranoia due to a dose of Campylobacter food poisoning a few years ago).

When I was a boy my Dad made a summer house which could revolve around to face the Sun, or hide us from our mother, but he had to fix it in place, due to the injuries my brother and I were getting when trying to make it go too fast but it was great fun

Do you save the vinegar for your chips?

One aspect of a chopping board I have never really seen is one that sits up on 2 (or 3) strips of wood. So I can put a tray under it for the assorted bits I chop off stuff.

They all seem to have nice straight edges down to the ground and putting anything for bits means hoping they are swept out enough to go in the dispoasl whatsit.

Add 2 or 3 strips to the underside and you can put something like a half size seed tray under it, pull it out, sweep bits into it and dispose of bits. Replace tray for next lot.

Ours are flexible. After chopping bend it into a sort of shute and slide the choppings into whatever container they are supposed to be in next.(if I understood the problem correctly)

DEFRA advice on permissible food scraps for chickens:

"food waste that comes from household kitchens (not catering kitchens) that only process vegan food and where no animal products enter the household, including petfood"

"There is a complete ban on using kitchen waste from non-vegan households and from catering waste containing products of animal origin. It is illegal to use catering waste from kitchens which handle meat, or vegetarian kitchens which may handle dairy products, eggs and so on. This ban also includes catering waste from restaurants and commercial kitchens producing vegan food."

                            Don't shoot the messenger...

I hear what you say, Snoop.
There is a move to get this overturned for pigs and poultry to stop so much food waste.
