There's nothing wrong with mobiles. It's some people who are the pests. I wouldn't be without mine. Great comfort toy.

Having a mobile helped in a huge way when my dear and young brother-in-law was killed.
When Mum travels through London on her own, I would worry so much if she did not have her mobile.
When I drive back down country lanes late at night after committee meetings I feel a little more safe if I know i can call Mr H should I have any worries.
They are good, mine is not jammed to my ear, it's just there if I should need it. It spends most of its time on silent!

        Technology eh, who'd have it!?

Lest not forget, we are on a digital device right now......

I take my phone down to the allotment - as someone recently suggested, if you get in a bit of a pickle and need help.Hoever, I do keep it on silent, and my conversations tend to be less than 30 seconds anyway - it's a male thing.

Plus, with mine it means I don't have to carry my camera with me every time on the off chance I might spot something interesting and want to share.

As has been said, it's the people that use them inappropriately that make them annoying.

          Agreed!

We got new phones a couple of months ago as both stopped working within a week of each other.

It was very hard to get the woman on the phone to understand that all I wanted was a phone that could make and take phone calls and had a camera on it.

She kept saying, "Oh, the 5385 has an mp3 player, and the 6754 has 3G capability, and you can watch tv on the 8972i"

If I wanted to watch tv I'd sit on my sofa and watch it! I have no idea what 3G technology is and I already have a (generic make) mp3 player which is about 4 years old!

I ended up choosing the phone I've got because it's pink and I like pink....

My first mobile phone was given to me by my daughter who works for one of the manufacturers. She gave it to me for my safety as I was spending a lot of time travelling to see to my mother who has altzheimers and was still living in her own home at the time.

This was just after they stopped being the size of a brick . They were very much a "man" thing at the time. I went into a pub one day to see all the phones on the bar, nonchalently placed there to show off that they each had the latest gadget. I proceeded to take the p**s out of them for showing off.

I was the one red-faced when mine went off (in my handbag) .

I went to a "no-mobiles" pub last night (to a Jazz Night).

Personally, all I want from my mobile is to make and receive calls. I don't have it permanently attached to me. It doesn't have a camera or any other "enhancements". This may change soon as I need a new phone. I really only want the facilities I have now, but I've a feeling that a new phone will have more whether I want them or not .

I don't use the phone to make calls, but texting is brilliant; quick and cheap (3p a text) to send a message saying what time you're home and what veggies you're bringing for dinner.
I do have to write texts in proper English though, with spelling and grammar and punctuation ...

Likewise - I text more than I talk (on the phone that is, not in general!). It is so much easier sending my wife a text, especially when she's on the tube. She picks it up again when she's got a signal rather than disjointed phone calls which are infuriating!

I'm a proper grammar texter (?) when I can help it - it takes me twice as long to read so called "txtspk".

Mange tout - even my Mum (in her 50's) has started with "txtspk" - she signs off now with things like C U l8r, or going 2....

                    Madness.

It is probably valid within its medium, where it was developed to allow greater content in the limited character count available.

It is not valid in emails and general correspondence and does not help people to get to grips with the finer points of spelling and grammar.

Having said that, it would probably be better if all Primary teachers were well versed in grammar and spelling. My daughter's work was "corrected" some years ago by deletion of the p in raspberry and insertion of an a in gigantic (after the first i). The teacher laughed and told me that is why there is always a dictionary in the classroom. She then couldn't find the word psychiatry, having looked under c and under s, and explained that it was only a small dictionary and didn't contain every word.

And that was two decades before mobile phones hit the streets!

it doesn't inspire hope does it? Poor old teachers! Ours now have to teach French to 8 year olds ... without being able to speak it themselves. Its going to be a long term ...

I never use text speak, I cant understand it nor do I wish to. My son uses it when he texts other kids, but always uses proper English when replying to me.

I also dont like the scourge of music players now and am a little fed up with seeing kids walking around blasting music out of their phones in public places, with no consideration for anyone else.

I use mine to speak and text, nothing else.

Don't have a mobile phone. Don't want one, don't need one so don't have one. Shame about everyone else on my train, though, sigh
