      • Another update on my lucky dip shopping delivery. I decided to have the camembert baked with home made crusty herby bread and salad for supper tonight. It has come just wrapped in plastic with no box. I don't seem to have a container that fits it well enough to bake it without it spreading all over the oven.

I also noticed that my small amount of shopping came in 5 plastic carrier bags, one for each type of grocery. Then inside them items were in smaller carrier bags and, of course, each item had is own plastic wrapping. So this pandemic isn't helping rid the world of plastic.

            • Lidls still have seeds, compost and containers in stock... can I claim necessity if I buy 10 x 20 litre bags of compost and a loaf of bread? That said they had no bread on my way home from work yesterday so compost and a pack of marshmallows! - (bad day, so sugar v's alcohol and the sugar won...)

(ps I keep getting the damaged bags of MCP and get 30% off!)

              • I think that being able to buy things like compost, seed, paint etc essential. Jobs like gardening, decorating etc I think would keep people busy and help their mental health during the lockdown.

                      • Well I just braved Aldi for the shopping for two relatives in their 80s. They had texted me rather unspecific lists slowly, in dribs and drabs, bit at a time. I thought I'd leave it till lunchtime as might be quiet. It was. No queue at all. I got most of what they wanted or "similar" substitutes. Some of the things weren't "right" of course but they will definitely not starve for at least a couple of weeks. I did my best. I know they like to shop for themselves normally but between me not knowing exactly what they want and the shop not having all of it's normal range I did struggle a bit.
Please anyone who has got relatives doing your shopping be specific but open-minded to substitutes.

No , does nothing . We have set up a facetime with the home for tomorrow morning with her.
Will drop in some magazines , perhaps see if I've any books she would read.

Managed to get a bag of compost from farm shop which is also a nursery (not open for plant buying but I was buying fruit and veg).

                          • One of the problems is interpretation of whats essential, we all have our interpretation so thats what makes it difficult.

If someone did a 30 mile round trip to collect gardening paraphernalia, i wouldnt class it as essential.

It's not easy buying groceries for others. I was conscious when I was at Sainsburys on Saturday that the restricted numbers meant there was a long queue outside. Looking at my sister's list and trying to decipher what she wanted, where in the store it might be took ages. 'Foil tray of salmon with lemon and herbs' - what does that look like, scanning the shelves. A number of phone calls made....

I imagine it will become easier once I've been a few times, as we're all such creatures of habit she probably wants the same things every week.
Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.
