I love second hand books from Amazon. I recycle a lot of my fiction books to Oxfam as a way of helping charity but when it come to reference books they tend to be for keeps.

Got the "The Dairy Book Of British Food" a few days ago, second-hand. The book it self was from a smoking home so ponged for a bit. (Reformed smokers are always the worst ) Skimmed through the book and saw many recipes I want to try. The book has been put together well and the tips it contains seem to be well spread through the chapters. Who ever wrote the basic information at the start has a good interest in the cooking of British food and knows how to inspire cooks to try new things.
Thanks for recommending it to me.

          Hi,

I've found that the RHS books rea great. They are a bit pricy but I bought mine through the book club Readers Union. They do a club for gardening books, and when you join you get to pick 5 books for a fraction of the price. I have joined cancelled them membership after the year and then rejoined and as a result have got the whole set for the same price as one of the bigger books.

But my bible is The allotment Handbook by Caroline Foley, it's great even if you don't have an allotment as it has a month by month section on what to do on the Veg plot. It costs £12.99 and I've given several away for pressies it's so good.

Tried to post earlier - but timed out!

When we first started growing veg (and even now) we found Pippa Greenwoods 'Pippa's Organic Kitchen Garden' (Dorling Kindersley) very useful, quite concise but straightforward. A good starting point.

              Victorian Kitchen Garden

I'm with you on this one Jax, I've got it on Video & had worn it out nearly!!

I've got two others aswell, Victorian Flower Garden - same format only flower (suprise suprise!) & the Victorian Kitchen, Harry is joined by a really roly poly lady who was a cook in a big house - superb viewing with the infamous Roly Poly pudding, never again to be confuse with Spotted Dick

They also did a forth one that I've never found called Wartime Kitchen Garden. This covered the Dig for Victory campaign I vaguely remember seeing it but they have never repeated these - Great shame in my view as this was argueably the heyday of the allotment movement.

See I can be serious somtimes

Nick - You and that spotted richard!! Yes it was Ruth Mott and I have seen the Wartime Kitchen Garden recently somewhere (isn't that really helpful - I don't think). I will have a look through my favourite sites and try and find it - just for you!

Our local Library has the book (well it did about 12 months ago) but I've never seen the video. Sorry to bring the you-know-what up again

OK LJ, I went and Goggled "Spotted Dick" and all I got was recipes and stories about Tescos.

It's the wording Jaxom - it's all down to the way Nick worded his first reply about redcurrants.
