  • Who?

LOL - heres one to sort the seedlings from the craggy oaks ive just booked concert tickets to see (alive, presumably)
    one night only
    special appearance
    none other than
    the all-time great
    brightest star in the firmament
    the all-singing
    all-dancing
    "GREATEST ROCKER OF ALL TIME"....
    p.
    j.
    proby !

    WHO?

(I assumed he was dead years ago but evidently not, The Return of, Carry on PJ!)

Not a lot to do with gardening but this is Chit Chat after all, LET THE WATER RUN DOWN was possibly the closest he ever got to a gardening song (unless you count, tweaked slightly, YOUVE COME BACK Cabbage Whites and SOMEWHERE I planted parsnip seeds but theyve yet to appear). But then perhaps one of his songs should be the anthem of Grapevine: I CANT MAKE IT ALONE!

    Welcome back PJ.

So who do you remember (just about)?

    bb

ps For those still completely in the dark PJ Proby was a major major star of the early 1960s, one of his first jobs was recording demo records for a guy who went by the unlikely name of Elvis Presley For some time PJP was seen as the new Elvis, his singing and stage act deemed so emotional and provocative that in 1965 he was banned from British theatres and British TV. BANNED! (Bear in mind that this was all happening before such things as Swinging London, Carnaby Street and Mary Quant fashions etc; Beatlemania was just getting going.) Amongst other things he is credited with being the first western male in the Twentieth Century to wear his hair in a pony tail! Hell be 70 next year. Rock on, PJ

I remember stories of his trousers splitting on stage (no offence, Wellie)!

Bassaboy, was he the guy who split his trousers on stage. Not that i would remember of course Only hearsay you understand.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

OK. Kiki Dee sat on the stage with knee-length white socks on RSG with Kathy 2I'll give it five" McGowan. Can't remember what she was singing - not sure I even heard it!

I'm afraid the trouser incident is all I know of him too (then again, it was 'the olden days' wasn't it? ).

The tracks that accompanied my childhood were mainly folk music - Martin Carthy, Bert Jansch, June Tabor and the like (my father once declared that my mother was a hippy before anyone else thought of it!).

I was too young for punk really, so my bedroom listening was bands like The Jam (still in love with Paul Weller! ), Madness, Prince and (though it wasn't very cool to admit it) The Human League.

          Claire
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

lol, some good tales coming out here! Kiki Dee! She's still going, I think she's in her 60s now... As indeed is Blondie if you saw her on TV recently. Yes PJP was banned for splitting his trousers when gyrating on stage. He claimed it was an accident but it also happened again in subsequent performances! The world wasn't ready for it and he subsequently wrote a song "I Apologise". Yup, Seahorse, it was indeed "the olden days" LOL - but when did they end and "the modern days" begin? 2002?

              It was 1974.

I remember my eldest (then 6) finding an old penny in 1974 and asking if that was the money we used in the olden days!

                I remember PJ..................PJ Harvey.

or Pearl Jam, but that's about my extent.

Mum subjected me to a lot of ABBA as a child - which is probably why I can't stand them now. Then again, the same could be said of Dolly Parton, and I quite like a few of hers.... Apple Jack, Me & Little Andy....

See - I keep telling my kids, born in the late 60s and 70s, that it's about time I had grandkids.

This has made me think of an incident that happened here lastnight! I was having a bit of a moment with the lovely Mr Johnny Cash when, at about 9.30pm, my 10 year old told me (rather forcibly!) to turn my music down.

Surely that's not the right way round!!!???

Yeah, I definitely get 'a little....well, you know...' too when watching that video. In fact hankies and a glass of something stronger than Tizer were required on the first viewing! Seriously though, I think it's one of the most stunning interpretations of a song I've ever seen. I believe Trent Reznor now refers to it as a song that 'isn't mine anymore'.
