    punnet 250g raspberries £3!!!!

    Parsnips 50p a lb!!
    White cabbages £1.11 each!!!! (78p a kilo)
    Sprouts £1 a lb!!!!
    Pumpkins / squashes £1 a lb!!!!!!!

    I KNOW!
I hate paying for veg ... and OH hates shopping with me, cos he has to listen to me saying "30p for a little parsnip", "50p for a jacket potato!" "put it back!"

We are having another nearly-free dinner tonight - the rest of the roast veg from Sunday, souped: pumpkin, parsnip, onion, garlic, carrot, chilli etc. I have hidden the Chutney as he kept sticking a finger in.

      It's totally shocking isn't it?
I'm nowhere near the self sufficient stage yet but am totally looking forward to sticking 2 fingers up at the supermarkets (discreetly!).

... and it isn't as if the quality is so great. The supermarket we use most offers veg that looks as though it has been dug up from the soil - different shapes and sizes and so on, but still not as tasty as home grown.

They reckon the most important (and hardest to come by) ingredient in a chutney is time. Hide it for a month and it'll be great. The last jar is always fabulous and then you have to start again.

PS - I get really annoyed at how far they've dragged the veg before you get to buy it too.

The only things I haven't had to buy are cucumbers and brocolli. The rest I just have to buy when it is on offer. I usually try to buy local veg but with Madmax out of work and money tight, we have resorted to buying veg from stores with offers on and usually that means the veg has travelled a fair bit.

I hope next year will be a better year for my garden and I will be able to avoid the veg aisle in the supermarket. Oh, and I hope the kale I planted keeps growing through the winter!

People forget very quickly we had a very wet july and a lot of the growing vegetable's were ruined it is called the law of supply and demand do not think for one minute i am defending the supermarkets i am not but when supplys are short they compete with each other for supplys wait until after christmas and see what price spud's will be jacob

On a similar topic, can anyone explain the sudden hike in 'value butter' price? It used to be 53p a pack in my local Tesco but suddenly jumped to 70p which means I can no longer afford it. did the rain stop the grass growing or something?
