I've looked at facebook and bebo and myspace but don't understand them either. I think I prefer just using forums - eg this, Garden Organic's and other fora, etc for interacting with like-minded people sharing similar interests.

I'm with your there Multiveg - my son had to show me how to register for Bebo!

I don't plan to keep in touch with anyone there, but I have to say its a great place for keeping up with the antics of my sons (27 and 28). They both have really interesting jobs and hobbies and post loads of photographs, which of course I generally don't see as we don't get the chance to meet up that often. And of course I keep abreast of what all their friends are doing (those little lads all seem to grow up amazingly fast!) I think half of Shetland is registered on Bebo as I have also found it interesting to see what my friends children are doing too (as Mums they are all registered too!).

I also see that the younger generation of our family are also keeping in touch this way, which is absolutely great. My mother and her sisters were great for keeping us all in touch, and after my Mum died I tried by best to letter write at Christmas etc, but I'm not very good at it. But its great seeing the younger generation (cousins etc.) sending photos and mail to each other. They may never meet up (who knows!) but they are certainly getting to know each other well.

I use facebook too, to keep in touch with family and friends too far away to pop around for a coffee and chat with - we can do it 'virtually' now! Its a cheap and easy way to show them all photos and so on - but I'm not into some of the antics and applications the younger ones use in the main (I'm 45 so definitely classed as middle aged I guess!).

i'm on facebook - sort of - i'm a single parent so no OH to chat to, work from home and kinda trapped at home when the kids are in bed - facebook relieves a bit of boredom sometimes - would much rather have a "normal" life with an OH and the ability to get out more with real life friends .....
if anyone wants to check out my facebook thing and add me as a friend, PM me

I'm on too - in the geriatric section! I can now keep in contact with younger rellies who don't answer your emails but find it highly amusing to send you a virtual beer. If I can only train them to bring me a real one! You can find my name on my blog address if you want to chat.

Same here - anyone want to add me, pm me for my name and info - though I don't tend to chat that much (but you can see photos of me and mine!!) cos I log on in quiet periods in work rather than at home in the evenings.

I'm sorry, don't want to offend anyone, but my facebook is for family mainly, and I have some quite personal stuff on there. Sure none of you are mass murderers or anything , but I'd kinda like to keep it seperate. Like I said, don't want to offend anyone , and more than happy to chat to you all on here Sunday nights etc. Sorry.

Just had a look at this facebook thing, and decided there might be some value in it for me. I don't need it to talk to my kids as we have been using Live Messenger and Skype for some time.

However, I have started a group called Brits in France, and we'll see how it goes..

Don't apologise Sarzwix. People use it for different things. It does give you the option for a fairly high level of security except to your invited friends. You shouldn't need to be sorry if you choose that level of security.

I entirely agree - Sarzwix its your perogative to keep yourself as private as you like. My facebook page is only open to those I chose to allow in, I wouldn't ever use it as a way to get to know strangers but at the same time I don't tend to use a computer outside of office hours so it's a good way for me to chat to those I chose, if that makes sense!! I say good on you for keeping it the way you want it!
