Having seen the information that can be gleaned, even on people giving fake dob's and rough locations on these sites on last nights Watchdog, I wont be touching the sites with a bargepole.

Nothing wrong with any of that, but personally Facebook to has allowed me to get back in touch with old friends who I didn't have the email address of (because email wasn't invented when we lost touch), mobile phone number of (they were invented but far too expensive for college students to of afforded back then), or their new "real life" contact details (see previous reasons). Keeping touch with people is far easier nowadays as I keep explaining to my little sister who seems to have forgotten there was once a time before mobiles and emails.

I do wish people would keeping mentioning this whole "real life" thing! Computers don't post information on these sites without the input of "real people". I know, because I've met up with several of them, who are old friends of mine with whom I'd lost touch.

There are a number of friends who I have got back in touch with via Facebook, and we have met up in "real life" and I dare say, now that we are back in touch and have each others mobile numbers and email addresses - we'll likely find it easier to stay in touch, and will continue to do so for some time! All thanks to Facebook.

l only use it for what it was intended, as a social network site. My details are visible to only those I invite as "friends" ie: people I know, and if we want to start getting into how much information is available online about an individual - then you really should worry about more than just Facebook...

D.o.b's and rough locations can be found via search engines and even sites like this, can't see the difference really. I asked a question when I started this thread that's all, people either choose to use these sites or not, simple really.

I too work from home and online communities come into their own for people like me - tis the equivalent of the coffee break for outside workers I guess.

I am on FB but to be honest I find it a tad boring and time-consuming, but that is only because I am totally weak-willed and my time-management skills need revewing.

I'm new to this site and I find this one way more interesting that FB. Although I agree FB is useful for keeping in touch with others across the globe.

One of my clients is based in Australia, we keep in touch through MSN, we have daily meetings on there - works really well for us.
