I'm not sure how much a mainly text-based messageboard costs to run, but I imagine a popular one with lots of hits would help subsidize the magazine as well as itself?
That's not how it works, I don't think. The more traffic the website gets, the more it costs to 'host' it, or for server space, I think...? (Just going on what we've been told on the other forum I'm a member of) However they should get paid more for the advertising if the site gets more traffic, so the income should balance with the costs, if they get it right...
It seems that the majority don't mind the banner at the top, but dislike the ad under the first post. Would there then be a loss of revenue if the latter one were removed?
Oh, this is odd, don't get any of the ads on my screen at work but get them all at home, must be something to do with the security settings at work, must speak to IT about how to block them.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Well as I said last time we had this conversation, I hate the damn things. I wouldn't mind if I could turn them off and if you were on dial up ( as some people still are as Broadband isn't compatable with their phone line) it would be a real pain in the slats.
Rant over and btw you get tehm after the 1st post of every page so if a thread goes to 2 pages that gets one as well

I remember Matress man too. Didnt like it then and I still don't although I think I've grown used to them as I didn't notice the extra ones that have been slipped in . If it helps pay for the Vine then it's fine by me .
In 6 months time you won't notice them - I didn't
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.
Yes folks - we've been through all this before and they were taken off for a while. And I had got so used to scrolling down before hitting "read last post" that it has taken me ages to get used to not doing it!
I must admit I'm not too keen on the ones below the first post either ........
Admin do try and get only gardening related ones, but it is difficult as if they have a key word in them related to gardening they get through.

I remember when we first got ads, think it was last year(?) & we thought they were to pay for the forum but were assured by G.Y.O. staff that they had enough money to run the forum with or without them. I don't mind the ads. but do find the one under the first post a bit off-putting, if it's a new topic & I open it & see the ad. under it at the bottom of the page I think nobody's replied until I remember to scroll down past the ad.!
I have a very "weak" broadband connection being so far from the exchange and I'm finding the whole system unbelievably slow since the adverts appeared. Anybody else having similar problems?

Surely if we are all just scrolling down past the Ads, then they are not working ... so why bother? I guess they don't know the ads aren't working...and GYO gets some revenue.
I don't mind, so long as it doesn't crash my system or anything (it does freeze up from time to time)
