Since when did we get Google Ads after the first post of a thread? How long has there been a banner at the top of all pages? not sure I can remember...must be de-sensitisation! Is GYO now making money from this? Am I the only one who objects to being bombarded with these slogans and having this excellent forum sullied by commerce? Surely if I require advice on where to purchase my seeds or whatever, i'll ask for a knowledgeable grape's opinion...Oh God, perhaps I've turned into Victor Meldrew.

I'll bet there will be one after this.....come on let's banish them...or at least to a seldom visited part of the site

They arrived sometime today, Paulottie - I think that they are a pain too, however I am also aware that this site needs to be funded somehow, so unless we all want to e.g. pay a subscription to be a member, I think we're probably stuck with them!

I think those ads have just arrived Paulottie. I don't find them intrusive. I just scroll past. This is a great forum and it does have to be paid for. If the ads pay for it - so be it. Or do you have another suggestion as to how to pay for it. Maybe you would like to send a big cheque to prevent the forum being sullied by commerce. I'm sure GYO don't want to make a profit - but they do need to break even. Or maybe you think only those who can afford to pay an annual subscription to fund the Vine can be Grapes.
I think you were just having a Victor Meldrew moment

I don't mind the bit at the top but am not a big fan of the ad under the first post.

We've had this debate before methinks and at least they are gardening related! If it helps to subsidise the vine and ensure it's existance, I'm all for it......................but please, not the mattress man again!

While I appreciate that things need to be funded, I really do hate 'ady' things in the wrong place, and pop ups, and stuff. Long live Voctor Meldrew, may his spirit go on.

Would it be better if they were down the side? Not sure if that would work, though as peeps all have different resolution/size screens? Might be an option though.

Also I believe (although a clever grape will correct me if I'm wrong) you can get ad blocker programs which sort these out as well as bloody irritating pop ups.

Personally, the ad under the first post doesn't bother me as you never scroll down that far as the posts work 'backwards' with the latest one at the top of the screen. Or is that just how I've got mine set up?

On my pooter the latest posts are at the bottom, I have to scroll past all the older ones to get to the most recent. Didn't realise I could change that??

Oh, and for the record I don't mind the ad banner at the top of the page (easily ignorable!) but am not keen on the one under the first post!

If you go into User CP on the top left of the green bar, then 'edit options' then change the 'Thread display options' to 'linear - newest first', that means you don't have to plough though a load of posts you've already read to get to the latest one.

Do your respective computers not recognise the little 'new post' arrow in the forum listing?

If I click on those it takes me straight to the new posts, and it only appears if there are new posts since I last logged on.

I think you do need to have 'cookies' allowed in your browser for it to work though!

I had not noticed that before, thanks Doctor

I'm under the impression that the more 'hits' or 'traffic' a website gets, the more it costs to run it. As the Grapevine gets more popular, it's going to cost more to keep it running. I can't imagine the magazine makes enough profit to pay for the 'Vine without some revenue being generated by the 'Vine. Another forum I'm a member of, does actually ask for contributions from the members via Paypal, this is ok (& I do contribute) but it's always the same people who end up paying, very rarely the 'noobs'.
I don't know if it makes a difference on this forum, but on that one you can save money by using the 'Forum Jump' at the bottom of the page and avoiding the forum home page (reduces the number of page 'hits')

As for the advertising we have at the moment, I could live without the advert under the first post, but if it's "have the advert or lose the 'Vine", I'll have the advert...
