My house is a bit out of the way Nicos, and I haven't had Halloween visitors (Guisers as we call them) for years. What a shame. Miss that, but it's all swings and roundabouts.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Ha! - hadn't noticed my 'intentional' spelling error!!!
Would have thought one of the lads would have noticed that. Just goes to show no-one ever listens to what I say anyway

Our Homewatch has been sent posters via the net for people to print of to either welcome or decline callers. Good idea.

I've not problem with little kids which have made a proper effort and are suitably escorted by parents BUT I do have a problem with the group of teenagers who called round MIL's about a week ago, after dark and looking a bit scary demanding treats. They had no evidence of any costume and were basically demanding money with menaces. I appreciate that they probably weren't going to knock her down and steal her life savings but that isn't really the point.

We may get the little girl next door round which is fine as we know her but I don't really see why I should be giving to half the neighbourhood - the pumpkin idea is quite good, not heard of that before.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't mind little ones in costume knocking on the door but like Alison I object to the hulking great teenagers just out for what they can get.We always used to give treats to callers but stopped a few years ago after we started getting gangs of lads about 13 to 16 years old, far too big, not dressed up, hiding cigs behind their backs damanding treats. We stopped for a few years but have decided to answer the door again this year just to see who comes. We usually just ignore the door so if anyone genuine calls for some reason they've had it! I was reading some tricks you can pull to get out of Halloween in the paper, one said put a basket outside with a note saying we've gone out but please help yourself to these - but leave the basket empty!Another said offer tangerines, the kids won't come back next year!

In the next village, where my daughter, son-in-law and grandaughter live, the little ones from the pre-school are dressing up and going out with a parent. They are using the pumpkin in the window method. Mainly they seem to be visiting each other's houses and being 'treated' by the staying-at-home parents. Exciting for the little ones and no unexpected doorbells for the others in the village. It's a very weeny village by the way - doesn't have its own school.

Sounds a good way to do it Flum. I'm not a fan of 'trick or treating' myself so the only person ringing our doorbell tonight better be the Tesco delivery(wo)man!!!

We've been trick or treated every night this week. We also live right on the road and next to a rowdy pub, so I am not answering the door to anyone, postman or Tesco man or anyone (home alone tonight).
BTW, the postman didn't arrive until gone 3pm today, that's a new record. And he wasn't a real postie, more like a Xmas Temp with a spare HI Viz jacket on.

Since moving into my cottage I have been a bit wary of the kids (young teenagers) round here and have usually put the notice in my window asking people not to trick or treat. However, I've been here a while now and got to know some of the local families, so this year I bought in some goodies and put a lighted pumpkin in the window. I've had some lovely visitors, mostly young children with parents watching carefully and it's been an absolute pleasure. I'm going to have to put the light off soon as I'm running out of goodies!!!
