  • Autumn colours!

Fantastic this year! I know roughly how we get the autumn colours, but what makes a good autumn- is it a cold wet summer? dry hot summer?
    I have no idea?

I'm not sure either, but certainly having a period of almost windless days helps to keep the leaves on the tree for longer, and the bright sunshine helps us enjoy the colours. The aspens have been glorious this year.

Think it also has something to do with cold nights/frosts??

I dont know why it's so good this year, but I'm very glad it is! My drive to work every morning is sooo lovely at the moment, I think this is my favourite time of year!

Isn't it just beautiful? Drove home across salisbury plane on saturday morning after doing a night duty and the sun shining through all those beautiful leaves filled my heart with joy and made me smile all the way home (33 miles!).

The colours are to do with the temperature of the days and nights, but I can't remember which combination produces the best colours. Obviously our wet summer has meant the trees have retained most of their leaves, for a really good show. I heard the scientific explanation on Radio 2 I think, so a troll thru Google would prob. find you the definitive answer.
