  • Gentle Thoughts...

For whatever reason, this little book entitled 'Gentle Thoughts' popped itself out of my bookcase yesterday to grab my attention once again, Trousers perched his glass of Pastis on it this evening as if it were a coaster, and I rather cruelly chopped his kneecaps off with a blunt instrument for doing so, because it's left a watermark on the cover.
Inside, my Dad had written: For Shelley. Love Daddy. August 1999.

    Page 1 says:
Angels fly because they take themselves lightly.

and at the end of today, I'll let you know what Page 2 says...

Wellie, what a lovely sounding book.

Is it one of those Patience Strong types with an uplifting passage on every page or is it an actual story? I love page one and I am guessing from that that it is probably the former.

How special to have an inscription from your Daddy in it too.

    Looking forward to page 2

I am not surprised - as the daughter of a branch librarian, I find books-used-as-coasters, turned-down-pages and books-open-and-splayed-flat-upsidedown all equally painful (and people writing in books, although obviously this is an exception to that - and the book is quite rightly very much treasured).

It was fabulous growing up with a personal bookshelf of 10,000 books, although that does mean that actually buying books does not come easily.

I enjoy inspirational thoughts as much as the next - and anything that makes me think and nod sagely - however Patience Strong alway strikes me as needing a bit of a slap.

Very much looking forward to hearing p2 - I think that we all need a 'pause' to think every now and again.

Can't wait for page 2 ... (see what you've started now!!).

And I too find pages turned down, ring marks and the like very painful, books just should not be defaced. Inscriptions though are very treasured, make a book even more special for its memory. I have a couple my dad wrote in the flap of, and now that he's not here any more they are more special than I can ever say!

My old primary teacher said that books were like friends and should be treat as such, that has stayed with me from primary 2 and is so true.

          Looking forward to page 2.....

Sort of book I like too - something to make you stop and think.

Also looking forward to page 2 Wellie!

And library books where people have written comments and criticisms and pointed out mis-spellings in the margins.

I also love books and find it very hard to get rid of them. Gave 6 carrier bags full to the animal welfare shop last week and kept wanting to go through them to rescue another one (much to Madmax's annoyance). We seriously did need to clear space on the bookshelves as they were threatening to collapse due to me having double and triple loaded them

Also looking forward to page 2 - I suspect it will be with us by morning - thanks for sharing Wellie.

Heehee sorry I had to chuckle at the irony

                    Lovely quote btw.

Do you know how long I've been sitting here thinking about that one?
                        .
                        .
                        .
                        .
I think that's 'clever people know that it's ok not to know everything'? or is it?

That's not a gentle thought, it's headache material. Looking forward to #3 though - as long as it is marginally less opaque!

I agree with you there Hazel - the first one was much easier to understand through the sleep haze of morning!

Yes, some of them are very deep, and intriguing - like Today's Gentle Thought:

Knowlege of what is possible is the beginning of happiness.
                              (George Santayana).
