  • Leaves!!!

Woke up this morning, looked out the bathroom window and discovered my lawn has gone from green to various shades of yellows, browns and oranges.

It's completely covered in leaves! All those leaves that'd been hanging on to the trees were finally blown off in the wind last night.

Guess what I'm doing at the weekend...

Pretty!! I just went out to clear the garden up a bit ready for mowing the grass. Moved some pots around on the patio and found the skeleton of a bird - aw, flipping cat!

Leaves, how many tons do you want? Great thing about owning woods is the trees - obviously - and the autumn/winter leaf drop but it's taking ages to rake the damn things up, even using the sucky/blowy thing it's a nightmare.

But great stuff for the raised beds next year!

Our council have little road sweepers on leaf duty at this time of year and whilst the bigger versions drop of loads of leaves at our site these little ones can get right to the plot and drop off loads with little effort on my part other than to fork them into my big compost bins. As TonyF says, its great for the raised beds the following year.

I'm going to make a chicken wire "cage" to dump them all in and let them rot down to give me a nice leaf mould.

We had a batch delivered a few years ago on a previous site and they were mostly pine needles
You need to make sure they are mostly deciduous leaves folks!!

I am thinking of doing that and bringing leaves from where i get apples - not many leaves stay in my garden and they just get mowed up and go in the regular compost bin.

If it doesn't rain for the next couple of days, I want to go for a walk and kick about the crunchy leaves ( bit like comfort food??)

I remember a few years back (I think 2001) we were living in Nurenberg in Germany and we took the boys to the zoo. The grounds were full of huge trees and there were loads of lovely dry crisp leaves everywhere, we all had great fun rolling round in them though the kids were somewhat surprised when Madmax and I started it off!

Oohhh, a great pastime kicking around in leaves (just make sure no dogs have been 'walking' there first ) Just another reason I love autumn ...
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

I'm probably just as green in the same sense to be honest. This is my first year growing anything - but I've learnt more here than anywhere else.

Stick with us kid, you'll go far...

(plus, I sawed it on Gardeners World a few weeks back).
