To bring things back down to earth a bit, both in terms of the looks dept, and in language, I'll do my best to explain (I'm a simple creature, so I should be ok).

Here's how I understand it (and I'm by no means advanced in this kinda thing - that's what I pay my web agency for).

A furl allows people who are active on a number of forums to post "lists" of the subjects or webpages that interest them on what are called "social bookmarking" sites (bit like facebook, but not as much fun) - like an online "bookmark" you can share with others - or not. You need an account on these sites to add to the lists.

Trackback I think allows the web moderators and other such wizardry people to track where their info is being posted (via furls and such). Once someone submits say this page to a furl, the trackback stuff sends a message (ping) to the web developers to notify them that it's been posted eslewhere too. I think.

I essence it all makes the grapevine appear higher up on the google "rankings" which means that justification can be made for charging to advertise on the website (proof of click-throughs, and page impressions, visitors etc).

My brain tends to go to mush once our web developers start trying to explain web positioning, and "spiders" and all the other techy stuff, but they now know to break it down to "WayneSpeak v1.0" for me.

Well, and I thought FURL meant Furtling Under Rhubarb Leaves!

I do get the picture - I just don't see it being relevant to what I use the grapevine for.

That's just it - it's not really. It's more a direct benefit to the website, rather than the users. Which I guess in a roundabout way, is a benefit to us....

It's what web developers and marketing weirdos like to call "functionality" and "dynamics".

Well I do anyway when talking to our MD.

I think furl also stands for Farting Under Repealed License

Thanks Wayne - that's made things marginally clearer! Basically, I can ignore the new icons, pretty as they are ... until the day I feel the need to Feed Upon Rotten Lettuce.

HELP, I only just found this thread and after reading it all the way through I am utterly confused. Shan't be clicking on any of them pretty little icons in case I blow everything up. Agree with earlier posts though, Ben is utterly gorgeous and I don't care if I am old enough to be his Mum (or maybe even his Granny)

I thought a Furl was wot you used for your porridge, but ........... before you all all have a go at me (Scottish Grapes that is) ............ its a "spurtle"

However, I will use it tomorrow in a craft session - "Now ladies .......... if you would like to "furl" your paper ..........

I'll let you know what they did!
