Guinea Pig Heaven

The girls have been put in their new run for the first time today. Bit unsure at first, but once I got all three transferred they were OK. Yes, Terrier, two of the photos are a bit blurred - no glasses! Didn't realise until I saw them on the puter!!

Yes, Seasprout. I've only had to cut the lawn a few times this year. Good job I've a cottage garden though, it's not very even. Big bonus is the bedding (shredded newspaper) and "poo" which goes onto the compost heap.

I used to find, (when I had Rabbits) that the broadsheets provided superior bedding material, however much of whats written in the red tops warrants being s**t on.

Aren't they wonderful to watch, so chatty amongest themselves and with quick bouncy times. Our babies are coming on well, sometimes I feel bad for the Mum. She never gets a moment's peace. We've decided to keep a daughter to keep her company, now that her previous partner turned out to be male!!! Have you ever bred from yours?

Do they live in the run in the garden all year round or do they need extra cover/warmth in winter?

No, we haven't bred from them - fortunately our three are all girls (I had enough problems with the school gerbils that I didn't know we were looking after but that's another story). They have lived in the old hutch/run for eighteen months now, Shirl. In the garden all year round but it was quite sturdy (alothough it now needs repairing) and they get lots of paper bedding to snuggle up in. If the forecast is really cold then we put more bedding in, and there's an old duvet in the workshop that we can use to wrap the bed part of the hutch/run if necessary.

Guinea pigs are really hardy animals, from Peru and Brazil originally. They are really tough and quite happy to overwinter outdoors in UK with comfy bedding and shelter from wind and rain (and our occasional hot sun)

Still kept and eaten (roasted alive, fur on) in Peru today. Taste like $h1t apparently. Much better to cuddle them!

awww, I love guinea pigs, had since them being a little girl, got 2 now in a very large run, they're the kids guinea pigs, well that's what I tell them

Had to laugh!!!1 My girls think the guinea pigs are theirs too!!! My 8 year old cleans out who has become Daddy. I'm partially cleaning out mum and babes who currently live in andoor huge cage in front room (surrounded by packing boxes but regularly kept company by me on computer.) Mine usually live outside too with a sheltered hutch which can be covered when need be and a run with shelter too for daytimes. Now we need another hutch and mum and babes will get acclimatised in garage. Maybe keeping one daughter for company for Mum. (If there is a girl.)

OH ate them in Peru ... all the old ladies on the tour were going "eugh, yuk" and asking what do they taste like?

Hi Rustylady,

I got a guinea pig too (he used to lived together with a bunny) but the bunny bullied the cavy so they are now splited in separate cage. My Cavy have a bit of problem with weight, he is now 2 kg
I love them !
