Anyway, to get back on topic again, found a couple of pics of my babies
The 'aubergine' one is our old Mondeo, the first car I drove after passing my test. She was a lovely old girl, wish we could have kept her, but necessary repairs were quoted at twice the market value
The other is a pic I took of my current car - Focus - taken when we were still looking. Unfortunately she doesn't look anything like as pristine as that at the mo!

Why do people instantly attack you when you say you're a cyclist?
Don't hate us cos we have thin thighs ! I wish
Nobody on here said you're bad because you drive. Be nice. And give us 3 foot passing distance, not 3 inches

When my sister was learning to drive, her instructor always said to look in the mirror after carefully driving past a cyclist 'just to check that they are still there'.

I try to cycle in the summer - however, maybe it's just my bike, but the slightest hint of dampness on the road and the brakes don't work. At all. And I find that just a bit scarey!

Do enjoy it tho' - makes me feel hugely virtuous for a start!

TwoSheds, I don't hate you Or any other cyclist, thin thighs or otherwise!
And as a former moped owner, I know how awful it is when cars don't give you enough room
However, the wording/tone of certain posts toward car drivers, comes across as unecessarily self-righteous, and bordering on insulting. There's just no need!

A cyclist is entitled to the same passing space as a car (or other vehicle). Personally, since my trip to work and back is in a rural area, I meet a lot of cyclists. I follow them until I can pass them safely. I often get tooted by drivers behind me when they percieve that I could have gone past earlier. Sorry, but the cyclists are as entitled to use the road (safely) as we are. They are also out in the awful, rainy weather we've been having. The ones that are the biggest pain as far as a driver is concerned are the ones on old cycles with beanies on their heads and no gears.

I suspect that these are the ones who have no other means to get to work and deserve our respect.

I cannot get to work by bus or bike. I wish I could. I do not like driving in the dark, I hate the 9-5 commuter drag (complete waste of time and unnecessary), I hate the fact that I have just had my car fixed 1 week out of warranty and it is still not working properly.

Can't I just retire and watch the world go by. And dig my garden and lottie.

Most of the roads around here have been in place for around 30 years or more. Some of the wider ones have cycle lanes painted along the edge but most are innappropriate for cyclists. I often see cyclists coming along a road with a 60 MPH speed limit, in the dark with a tiny little flashing light!

If the govenment wants me to get on the road on my bike in the dark around here, they can forget it mate!

If I do go out on my bike I use the path, as I would rather suffer the wrath of an irate pedestrian, than be splattered all over the road by a juggernaut!

                    • To get back to topic I drive a 52 plate green Ford Ka. I love it and can fit an amazing amount of stuff in it, providing nobody wants to actually sit in the back.
My first car was a Mk3 Escort and was my pride and joy. Cried when it died.

My next vehicle will be a smallish diesel van. I tend to lug two Boxers, garden tools and various things all over the place with me. Also, as work is 20 miles away, I can't cycle, even though in an ideal world I would.
(I'm one of the motorist who get bibbed for not passing cyclists/mopeds on the narrowest blind bends. I'm quite content to doodle along till theres more room and I can see whats coming the other way)

                        • Love the Taunus. Used to have one in Germany back in the early 80's.

Drive a pair of Toyota's these days. My baby is a Landcruiser and the runaround is a diesel Yaris. For every gallon in the cruiser i get 25mph and in the yaris (£35 per year tax) i get 60!!!!! But hey, you cant beat the comfort of a large 4X4 and its old enough NOT to fall into the £400 tax bracket.

snap, my dad bought it for me in 1986 for £25. the car was the same age as me!!! i sold it two years later to a bloke in a petrol station, he said 'is that yours, i'll give you £200 for it, I am after a donor car for a restoration job' I said, can you drop me home!

my latest is a 1.1 206 as a run-about, it is not going to win any races, its amazing how quickly you get used to seeing other peoples lights disappearing into the distance at traffic lights. the other car 'we' have is a zafira, ideal as the OH is a childminder and yes we do need all seven seats in it, for four days in the week even i can't go with them anywhere, but then thats no real loss as the peace and quite when the screaming little (sorry lovely kids) that she looks after have left the house is worth it.

                              • 1st car was a Ford Popular. I won't go there!!. 2nd was a Triumph Herald, written off in a very minor bump because the front was made "all-in-one" so an accident made the car irreparable.
