  • Such distractions...

Well, i discovered this website several days ago...and haven't got an ounce of work done since! I work from home you see, and i just can't resist having the odd "quick look," then before i know it the morning has disappeared!

There is so much good advice, and everyone seems really friendly (and slightly mad - just how i like it!). I like it here, I think i'll stay...

The Vine is like having children - in six months time you will wonder what you did before you found / had them .
Welcome - hang your back to front coat with the rest of them .

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Well i started my 1st veg patch early summer & opted to take this year as an experiment & grow everything i fancied to see what would work & what wouldn't as i have very heavy clay soil & very wet in places.
I tried early & main potatos (donated by brother, no idea what type!) dwarf french & runner beans, little gem lettuce (poor turn out), sweetcorn (about 1 cob per plant but delicious), courgette (very poor turnout), butternut squash (1 little squash who died when the frost came, lots of flowers which fell off before opening), cucumbers, broccoli, spring onions (rubbish, looked like blades of grass & wouldn't fatten), leeks (look ok so far & only thing left in plot) & swede (pulled them out last week as were rubbish also, but got 3 lemon sized ones).
I have also this week recieved my 2 Rhubarb plants & are getting 3 apple trees courtesy of my dad sometime soon. So for a newbie, i'm quite proud of myself! Just thinking now about what to try for next year. Hubby to be is a bit picky with what veg he likes & normally have to stick to beans/peas, carrots & broccoli but i'm trying to expand his horizons!

Good for you Newbie, and good luck for next year. Your heavy clay soil will improve year on year if you give it plenty of organic material. I find it best not to spread it about thin but to concentrate on an area at a time and give that bit as much as I can work into it.
While you're waiting for your soil to improve things like lettuce, spring onions and carrots will grow perfectly well in pots.
I think the flowers fell off your squash because of the awful weather we had. Hopefully it will be much better next summer. Look forward to seeing how you get on with your plans for next year.
