  • How silly

Yesterday whilst perusing the aisles at Tesco, the "reduced section" caught my attention.

Bags of shallots reduced to 25p as the sell by date was today. You can imagine my amazement at such stupidity. As if shallots will go off this side of spring.

Despite having lots of alliums in store, I snaffled a couple of bags to roast about the Christmas beef joint.

    Bargain.

It's like the pot of parsley I picked up at Sains the other day - down to 20p.

It's not like it's 'gone off' or anything?

Gotta be done! I bought some strange french type shallots recently - grown in Bedfordshire - and planted them. They were not in the bargain bin but decidedly cheaper than seed shallots and a variety I couldn't otherwise get hold of. You couldn't leave them there could you PW?

Never seem to do that with beer!

For heavens sake piglet, keep your voice down. You admitted on another thread to being a Radio 2 listener (aka TOG). Where do you think us old coffin dodgers buy our food,

We (OH and I) were born in the pre best before, eat by, use by, once opened keep refrigerated generation.

I'm amazed we've reached the age we have without all the warnings and hype!!

I tend to agree, Valmarg. In my younger days, you know food was 'off' when it had fur growing on it!

I ignore dates and just have a rule which we use in our fridge.

A - If it isn't supposed to smell, and does, it's off.

                B - If it's supposed to smell and doesn't, it's on it's way. Goto A!

Is this flour past its best? Or should we be thankful for the extra protein?

Wouldn't even attempt to try it Shirl - straight in the bin.
