I can't remember a particularly awful present given to me, people know I love chocolate so if they're stuck for ideas then that's always a winner with me! My boss did once give his wife a colander. What was in his head at the time he bought it, I'm not too sure, but she put it under the car and ran over it, several times just to make sure. He learned his lesson the hard way! The Out laws always insist on getting clothes for the kids... I point gently in the direction of any shop that sells clothes that don't shrink as soon as you look at them but as often as not it's 'We got a real bargain!' and the outfit is Barbie doll size in no time flat!

The kids take it well and smile and say thank you, so no harm done!

I prefer it when my MiL gets knitting - she makes the most wonderful arans.

I have had a good few years when I have had either bath sets (of the cheap and nasty variety) or candle sets (I like candles, but have too many holders as it is, and prefer nightlight ones anyway) coming out of my ears.

Oh yes, we've had several of those...

The worst was from OH's grandparents who usually get us lovely presents (I've had gorgeous silk scarves and cashmere throws etc from them, and OH has had lovely Spanish leather wallets or belts).
Quite randomly they decided to buy us "novelty" Christmas themed tableware - a musical Santa cake slice, Santa napkin rings, a Santa-themed platter and a Santa-themed candle ring type thing...

They were truly awful, moulded polyresin things and we ended up Freecycling them last year, as I couldn't bear even looking at them in the loft!

The thing is, I would have thought we're quite easy to buy for. We love gardening, have dogs, love cooking and eating.... loads of ideas there!

TBH, I'd rather people put a fiver in the Christmas card than bought a naff Christmas present for us. At least we'd be able to spend the fiver wisely!!

I can'r ever remember getting a crap Xmas pressie tho often I tell people not to bother buying me pressies at all, not something that rings my bell.

This year is different - we're buying each other engraved Sneerboer trowels and J is having some posh jewellery a bit later in the year when the fairs are on in the spring.

every year bobs older relatives buy him box's of buiscuits, every year we throw out 3 or four boxs of them. even the church dont want them for the poor people.

I think the worst for me was a big jar of stem ginger chunks in really thick syrup. I detest ginger and this stuff in syrup was horrible. Totally useless and pointless. uck.

I like your style, Kirsty_B and everyone else - yes the toddler can do wonders with her porridge!! Unfortunately, changing it ain't an option (dad bought it on a work trip to the States) - it may be too big alright, but I think the porridge idea works best!!

And yes, she is wearing the nice plain pinafore I got her for most of the day!!

We once got a jar of peaches macerated in brandy or something... they looked revolting.... and we gave them away....

Not keen on it as is either but have a lovely recipe for salmon which involves two pieces of salmon sandwiched together with butter, chopped ginger, nutmeg and saltanas and then wrapped in pastry. Honest, it's heaven and one of OH's all time favourites.

My sister and I, in our teens, used to get given presents from our Great Aunts that they'd lovingly knitted for us during the year, and we used to sit round the Christmas Tree trying to guess what they were.......
never did guess!
