Hi
This business of trying to eat locally is sometimes portrayed as a bit of a trial, often the view of those who don't - it's a good excuse. But it's also a challenge and can actually make shopping more enjoyable. I have settled into the seasonality thing quite happily -exceptions made for clemantines and 2 avocados - my Christmas treats.
Without going down the dandelion coffee route it is near impossible to eat entirely locally, but there's a lot that can be done and it's very interesting to find out and research what's available and keep up with new suppliers. My other aim in life is to keep out of supermarkets as a protest - still not entirely successful but by talking to small local businesses it's surprising what they can get for you.
And it's a big but, it's often more expensive, and I get round that by buying less. The other part of the challenge is to cook and prepare as much food as possible yourself and again I've really enjoyed doing this, learning to make pasta etc.
So I wish this message could be got across to those who moan, abandon the telly and get stuck in to cooking, preserving and gardening, some of the most life-enhancing skills you can acquire. You'll be happier, healthier and more at peace.....
well, it does it for me anyway.
