  • New Years day - what did you do?

Lady Wayne and I spent the night at the brother-in-laws, so we got up and had a nice leisurely breakfast then headed home (only 10 minutes away). Brother-in-law and girlfriend then came round to us a bit later on and we went for a walk at Sharpenhoe Clappers: Attractions - Sharpenhoe Clappers | The Chilterns AONB

Was really nice - we'll probably make it a yearly thing.

We then had lovely roast dinner that evening.

A good walk really does make you feel good doesn't it?

Got home about 8:30 am, drank several gallons of coffee, took puppy for three hour walk on local beach to clear the fog from my head, came back, showered, went out with Maggie and Iona to local indian restaurant, came home, felt like sh*t, went to bed, woke up this morning bathed in sweat - man flu methinks !!

No Ratty, I reckon it's 'hangover & too hot curry' not manflu!
We slept in then went to the Trafford Centre, had a walk round, bought a couple of books & had lunch in Carluccio's there. No chance of me cooking when I don't need to. We did go for a nice walk the day before though in Dunham.

We had a totally lazy day - having spent the Christmas week dashing between Cambs, Beds and Herefordshire and then throwing a 5th Birthday Party on 30th for our son (23 kids - thank goodness for Children's entertainers!) we decided to dig in and have a day in front of the telly - Bedknobs and Broomsticks followed by Mary Poppins - It was fab!!!! And a pleasure to see that they still hold that magic - Kiran loved every minute of both film!!

Spent New Year's Eve at daughter's, saw new year in and slept on her sofa. Up New Year's Day, woken by youngest grandson at some ungodly hour (probably actually 7 am). When they came down I tried to pretend I was still asleep but he wasn't having it and proceeded to climb all over me. Helped granddaughter with her cross stitch for a bit, then took her home with me and we had a lazy day. Bed (both of us) around 9 pm.

We got up really early because we had to cook a giant turkey (groans).....again. It's a long story but I will bore you with it

Being an eco-minded gal, last spring I asked an organic farm if they would raise me a turkey. How big? they asked. About 18lbs says I as a number of the family normally come for Christmas.

"Ooh," says number 2 daughter "Order one for me as we are having the in-laws round this year." so I order a second one (about 10lbs)

In September I get a phone call from my brother. "I've booked us all into a rather nice hotel for Christmas lunch" he says. "It's the only way we'll be able to all have a Christmas together."

(We used to be such a small family that we could all fit around my Nan's table and there'd be spaces, but we've married and expanded - in every direction - since then.)

This left us with 2 organic turkeys on order that we didn't really need, but we could hardly cancel them, I'd have felt awful about it. Anyway, it turns out that it's been a great year for turkeys, ours ended up at 21lbs and number2 daughter's at 13lbs (they can't put them on a diet.) So we ate the big one on Boxing day...and the day after....and the day after that.... And as soon as it was all finally finished, we had to defrost the other one and cook that as it was just too huge to live in either mine or my daughter's freezer for any length of time.

Right, well I'll be off now then....got to make supper. Turkey curry anyone?
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Planted a few seeds in the morning In the afternoon, made some flapjacks with the kids, then did roast pheasant, Nigella's ginger ham + a selection of veg for tea. Turned out not bad, if I do say so myself!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

Didn't go to Whitchurch to see the horse driving event as planned 'cos OH decided to stay in bed, so made the most of the good weather and spent the day in the garden, tidying up the flower beds and levelling the lawn(mole attack deluxe) Oh, put the rest of the spring bulbs in ... finally. As it went dark, wondered where the day had gone so quickly! Suddenly felt very depressed when I remembered I had to go back to work today after 2 weeks hols.
