In our materialistic world where we all want more or better or bigger, I was suprised to recieve this email from my sister, wishing me ENOUGH. Not too much, or excess, but just enough. A bit twee perhaps but here it is

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray
the day may appear.

Enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.

Enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

Enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may
appear bigger.

Enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

Enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get
you through the final good-bye.

What a lovely sentiment. I think there's too much Me first in the world (present Grapey company excluded - cos you're all lovely )

Slightly on the same subject:
I saw this guy (Danny Wallace) on Celebrity Mastermind the other day and he was talking about this:

Yes, I like that. If you think about it, a lot of us are trying to be 'Self Sufficient', but do we really think about the word "Sufficient"? The dictionary definition of the word is of a quantity that can fulfill a need or requirement but without being abundant; ie "sufficient food" It's quite refreshing after the rampant commercialism of Christmas...

Ahhh...what lovely, simple words to greet and cheer us up to start off for 2008 (without being difficult Shakepearean I NO understand mostly ).

It has a bit of Ying & Yang element of philosophy in that we do need both good bits and bad bits in life to appreciate what we have in this world. I heard this phrase along the lines of, "You believe in the light because of the darkness". I also love that phrase by Kevin Spacey in American Beauty film, "It's hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in this world" even after he'd died. I'm sure I'll want to remember these words to remind myself now and then.

On the other hand, you can always take on the philosophy from the TV ad, "Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet" .
