  • I have watched and enjoyed all of Hugh's programmes(except the one where he moved to his farm-smacked too much of big business for me)
We always grew and reared our own food, poultry, lambs, and rarely,if ever!,visited a supermarket, living as we did in the back of beyond.
Then I was "left" with four small children(and obliged to live in a Council house!) but we always ate well.
As Yoanbob has said, lack of money doesn't mean you have to eat cheap meat.I too eked out a bit of good meat with lentils or beans and grew and raised what I could.
Oh!! The shock and OUTRAGE from my neighbours when they learned that those dear, fluffy baby bunnies playing on the lawn were destined to become meals!!
Were they vegetarian?,I asked. No , but they could never kill an animal they had looked after. What a good job some of us can,I replied,or we'd all have to be veggies.I believe they reported me to the R.S.P.C.A.!!
So ,to this day I can only eat meat that I know has been kindly treated in life.
Also,Paul,I do agree that there can be no difference in the taste of rare-breed meat and intensively reared. The difference is in what they are fed.Free range pigs and poultry will,of course, have a happier life but if they are fed the same c**p as the others they will taste just the same.

        • there is no proof that free range or organic meat or veg has a higher nutritional value, however the tests dont really work for me as they test the content of the food not how easily your body can use the provided nutrients, I feel much healthier eating a salad a day for a month than taking a multi vit tablet, your body is designed to gain nutrition from un fettered food stuff, the least prosesing the better.
Organic is usually at least the same as free range with better food, at its best its much better than free range.

            • Well... I have watched the programmes avidly, and sort of enjoyed them (as much as you can enjoy seeing animals kept in appauling conditions etc.)
I have to confess to not buying free range chicken, but will certainly be buying it this week. I have, however bought free range eggs for years, but since our local supply seems to have stopped (I fear Mr Fox paid a visit) I have had to resort to JS for them .
So hubby and I had the 'free range or not' conversation and whilst I am happy to go for it, if only for the sake of the birds, he is sort of in favour, but would be happier if we noticed a superiority in taste. Now I have a horrible feeling that we may not notice any particular difference, but would like to think I would pay out the extra anyway. I just hope this isn't the case as it would get OH onside.

I also received the letter from JS - obviously they're taking this seriously: GOOD! Let's see if they do something about it! It was a shame the lot in the House of commons (is that right??) were dead/asleep/absent though!!

Now looking forward to (once again - if one can 'look forward to') tomorrows food fight programmes.

My big concern is that people will jump on the band wagon this week, and maybe next, but then things will all go back to the way they were...

Me too - am too tight to waste anything that I can use . Didn't have time to use the turkey bones this year so smashed them up and froze them. Will be making some lovely soups this weekend if the weather lives up to the forecast!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                    • I bought a free range chook today.
                      I'm a vegetarian.
                      "the Hugh effect" !!

NB. although it was twice the price per kilo compared to cheap chicken (£3 over £1.50) the actual bird only cost 96p more at the till. And I suspect that a lot of the weight of the cheap bird was water, seeing what drains off it in the pan. So we're paying £1.50 a kilo for water ??

                        • After watching Jamie's follow up to HFW last night, methinks it's time to give the old hotdogs the 'Heave ho' Yuuuukkk!!

I'll stick with Hellmans mayo though!

Haven't yet seen Jamie's programme, but it's on tape ready to continue the conversion process for us! OH said he didn't really want to watch 'that kind of stuff' on a Friday night.
I'm already thinking we've sorted of converted anyway (with the chooks) so hopefully last night's prog will have converted a few more souls.
