  • Buying local

In addition to all the posts/threads discussing HFW's programme regarding chicken, I wondered if anyone knew of this website: BigBarn.co.uk - The Virtual Farmer's Market -

It doesn't list all the local producers (not in our area anyway - our butcher isn't listed), but does show up some that you may not have been aware of. Interestingly, they are now jumping on the HFW bandwagon (no bad thing) and mentioning the chicken campaign on their home page.

For anyone in the Bedford area there is also this website: buy-LOCAL.net who actually go one step further and deliver to your door. Unfortunately we are just outside their catchment, but if I can get a group of residents together from the village I live in, they may well consider a group delivery as it will be more financially viable for them.

Note for moderators: If I'm outta line by mentioning the websites (contravening advertising rules), then please obviously feel free to remove the post.

Interesting Wayne. A couple of Farmers' Markets that I know of are not listed but a couple of producers I didn't know about are! Widens the list a bit!

Very interesting, it showed up some of the folks that sell at the local farmers market (I usually cannot afford their prices though). The only thing within 5 miles of me is a pick your own which hasn't advertised for the last 4 years and every time I pop down there there is nobody about.

I occasionally shop at Riverford on the Totnes road in Devon. The price of their veg. makes me blanch but their meat I find very reasonable.

Doesn't mention either of our butchers, both of whom are excellent and sell local produce. It does mention a couple of places that I didn't know about. I suppose it can't mention every little farm shop - you spot those when driving! I would go to our local Farmer's Market but it's held on Tuesdays, not helpful to those out at work.

I also noticed on my way to work this morning that our local vineyard has a "Sold Out" sign up. I was intending to go and have a look in the Noo Year. Not much use if they've run outta booze . But I'm glad they had a good Christmas .

Hope this posts OK. Just had a "real" fire alarm. Haven't finished recovering from a nasty bout of flu and I end up standing about in the wind and rain for 3/4 hr .

My butcher is on there - Fulmerfields - he had to close down the shop on Boxing Day because the abbatoir he uses wont come out to him any more, saying its not economically viable for them, so now he's gone internet only. A real shame, it was such a brilll shop, lost to big commerce once more. I feel a rant coming on so I'll leave it there before I get started ...
