  • Need broad beans

    HELP!!!

Any grapes in North/East London/Essex who know of any pick yer own farms or suppliers of fresh broad beans. I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance to satify this desire.
Every year I dream of fresh tender young broad beans. Do I find them on sale around me? Not on your life.

Many of you may say 'grow your own Hils': I would if I had the space.
Grew a few in a grow bag the other year but in all honesty the crop was not worthy of the space.

    Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

WiZer, I just gently steam the little darlings and then scoff the lot. Brings back very fond memories of my childhood; dad used to grow broad beans and we would have a family 'pig out' of steamed baby beans and roast chicken.
AHH, they were the days/years. (The 1950's that is)

pod the beans and then take each bean out of its skin. Put the beans in a ban with some chopped up bacon and onion (and garlic if liked) and fry for a few minutes and drop on top of some crispy salad. Wonderful.

Man after my own heart piglet,

I was going to say new potatoes, gammon, browad beans & a little of the fat poured over to make the HP sauce run around topped with a slice of crusty bread .

Hils, check out what they have growing at the mo ad I think they were behind on their crops a few weks back ( I use Parkside farm myself, hence know to call ahead).

Their number is 020 8367 2035 plus you can subscribe to a newsletter too.

I think their message is a bit old on there though now

...Although that said they have newletters on the website which are more up to date (1st May) and is the new letter they send out by the looks of it

Many thanks Shortie, I'll give them a bell before I make the pilgrimage.

It has occured to me that many of you may be thinking 'what is the big deal about broad beans' Weelll it's difficult to explain....it's all about good things that you remember from your childhood and the fact that they are still good things when you are an old goat.

Just a note of caution, we grow the green bean varieties, and at the moment, the very small pods with small very tender beans are absolutely delicious.

We went to Bakewell Farmers' Market last Saturday, and the broad beans they had on sale, I wouldn't have given you a 'thank-you' for. They were old, and the beans would have needed skinning.

There's nothing quite like growing your own, and picking the varieties you like to grow.
