  • Thank goodness for water butts!

We had no water on Monday or Tuesday this week (neither did most of Blackpool, Poulton etc) due to some problem with a water main....

On Monday, I just got water for the animals from the water butts we have and filled our kettle from there too.

Yesterday, large tanks were delivered into the surrounding area for people to use. Unfortuntely, the nearest tank was 3 miles away! There wasn't a tank in our village at all!

It's bizarre, as our village is full of old people (lots of retirement bungalows and park homes etc), so you'd think that they would be the most vulnerable in terms of not having access to water, but nothing was done. Of course, the local shops had been shut by environmental health, so they couldn't even buy bottled water!

We made the decision to manage on our (over spilling) water butts for the 2 days and have used the water for all the animals, flushing the loo and filling the kettle. This was rather than drive the 3 miles, queue up with our containers and drive back.

We would have been b*ggered if we hadn't got the butts in the garden, especially with 2 dogs, 4 chickens and a rabbit, never mind us in the house!

Luckily, the water is back on now (had to put the dishwasher on, hurray!) but I was rather mad last night, thinking how whoever delivered the water tanks hadn't really taken into account that they'd missed 2 villages out of the equation.

I hope you are asking for a good explanation why your village didn't get tanks under the circumstances. Well done for coping.
    Happy Gardening,

The incompetence of many people dealing with situations such as this no longer surprises me.

Makes you wonder what sort of questions and answers go back and forth at the job interviews!

Lucky you had the butts, O.W.G., get onto United Utilities (assume that's who supplies you) & complain, they've said people will get compensation & you should be due an apology as well for being left out.
Into every life a little rain must fall.

That's ridiculous, expecting the OAP's to travel 3 miles for water Did they expect them to fetch it on the bus or what?! You can understand them not wanting the shop to sell fresh foodstuffs, but what's wrong with bottled/canned/frozen stuff??!! Definately some complaints need to be made, to make sure it doesn't happen again.
