New bank holiday

Apparently there was a poll on GMTV recently and several bank holidays were suggested, including a "National Beatles Day" (I'm sorry what!?).

Anyway, the one that won was a more appropriate day in my humble onion and has subsequently been created as a Downing Street e-petition: Petition to: create a new public holiday, the National Remembrance Holiday to commemorate The Fallen and our Nation, with the holiday falling on the second Monday in November each year, the day after Remembrance Sunday.

I know we have rememberence Sunday, but if we are to have a new bank holiday, I would rather it was for something like this than "National Beatles Day" or "National Diana Day" or some such rubbish.

I have to agree Wayne. If we are thinking about something that has affected people's lives for over 90 years then these's no contest with brief fame.

As a kid (you know, when you're a teenager and you know everything) I used to think Remembrance Day glorified war. I was uneasy with it. However, I now think differently.

When do we NEED a bank hol? When is the longest gap and hardest time to get through. Bit grim at the mo but there's easter coming up. November does seem like a good time.

I agree we should have a "British day" and be proud of who we are and the people who have sacrificed to make this country what it is. Every other nation in the world is proud and celebrates why don't we?

D'you remember when the October half-term used to be called Blackberry Week? (Or was that just in the North East?!) And on Bank Holidays things used to actually be shut? The little corner shop was open for an hour at lunch-time & about an hour in the evening & that was it. I hate it that so many people have to work on what should be rest-days, just so that people can worship the great god "Shopping"

I agree, St Georges Day should be a bank hol but I also agree with a day off in November - and the serious reason of remembering as well. I've added my vote to the govt petition thingy.

Hmmmm - can I have two votes??? Two bank hols?? Oh, and a third for Farmer Giles birthday (at least the weather should be good then!!).

We have a bank holiday on the last of October, it is'nt for anything in particular but its the last bank holiday before Christmas. We also have our own St. Patrick to celebrate our irishness.

here here holiday for rememberence, the guy who was the last survivor of ww1 died at new year, I met him and his wife about 8 years ago in thailand, they were visiting the bridge on the river kwai, very intresting to hear their stories, his wife was imprissoned too.

Personally I would vote for no changes as it would simply mean that I would have to take a days leave on that day when everywhere was busy rather than when I actually wanted to resulting in a loss of flexibility.

It now makes no difference to me. Although I still work I'm technically retired so can take time off as I please. However, had I not been, a day off in November would be ace, and I've always thought St George's Day should be a Bank Holiday.

As a footnote, my youngest son's birthday is 11th Nov, and my step-daughter's 23rd April. They'd be pleased .

I have considered that we should have a "feel sorry for Wayne as his birthday has been tarnished by the fact that he was born on September 11th, albeit 26 years earlier than that other 'event' on the same day", but then thought better of it.

I think the holiday names vary according to where you live. from what i remember my cousins in the north east of scotland had the 'tattie holidays' when they made loads of money tattie roguing, and the daffy holidays where they made loads of money picking daffodil bulbs. where I came from in Leeds they were just half terms hols. I don't fancy a St. George day, it wouldn't mean much to me and has religious conotations, but I would definitely support a remembrance day.

Although I think we ought to celebrate St. George's Day as our patron's saints day, it is not for religious reasons, but to celebrate being English as the Welsh celebrate being Welsh etc.

Thinking about it though, it IS awfully close to May Day and we need to spread 'em out a bit.
