    Bum.

It don't matter what its called or when it is... My Employer will force me to work and for flat rate only. But will let me have an hour off for every hour actually worked and expect me to be grateful. Until recently we got double time + day off in lieu for Bank Holidays.

It seems to me that what most working folk want is an extra day off work, and they are looking for a suitable justifiable name to justify this need. Why not stick to and existing day such as Rememberance Sunday and have all shops and businesses close for the day.

Makes sense to me, but then, I'm retired, so every day is like a public holiday.

Remembrance day would be perfect for a Bank Holiday. The times we live in now we have an awful load of servicemen and women abroad now.

As I've already said though, we would't get an extra day off as we'd end up with a day less annual leave instead

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Why do you need an extra day off, and would you expect to be paid for not working that day?

I seem to remember that we have fewer bank holidays than most of the other big European countries. Are we being fiddled? Do those who get more BHs than us get paid for them?

We certainly don't get as many as some: Trades Union Congress - UK has least bank holidays in Europe - TUC wants three more a year

I'm frequently late getting off my shifts and quite often don't get a break if it's too busy, sometimes this means working 11 or 12 hours straight, don't get paid any extra.

                    Aaahhh, poor me!

years ago we sometimes had a moo cow Monday
when we had a cattle market in Loughborough the nearest pub used to open at around 7am.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.
