Monty Don... in Mexico!

Tonight at 9.00pm. I don't know all the gardens he'll visit, but I used to live near Xochimilco, which is one of the places featured, and I've been to the etnobotanic (sp?) garden in Oaxaca, which is stunning. I'm looking forward to it, hope othe grapes enjoy viewing a bit of exotic Mexican gardens.

I watched it and I DID enjoy it - immensely. It's nice to see gardens in different parts of the world. I love what they have done (although from dire necessity) in Mexico City with the little plots producing food. The big jungle garden with the 'follies' was brilliant too. Mr D was dubious. Mr F and I loved it. He needs a Thesaurus though. Everything was 'beautiful' - well, it was, but it got a bit repetitive!

I was half watching it while sowing my seeds. I like the bit where they showed people growing their vegetables in whatever little space they could find in the towns or city using recycled soft drink bottles for pots . I agree with one lady that to buy proper pots are so expensive when you can get these plastic boxes for free from food packaging, certainly works a treat in poorer countries.

I saw it and thought it was really good, loved the whole Mexico city plot thingywotsits (can't remember what they were called). Not sure I was keen on those architects "gardens" though...

Re: Monty's limited vocabulary, that's exactly what they'd said in the Sunday Times!

Pity he didn't show the plants market in Xochimilco (the floating gardens at the beginning) they are a gardener's dream! You can get everything, including full grown trees and pots in every size and colour. (there's even vans and lorries parked nearby in case you need their services to take your 'shopping')

The Cuban gardens were also brilliant. I loved them growing bananas in their little patios! Funny that we as a society have gone through so many centuries of modernisation and development, only to realise we have to go back to basics both for fulfilment and practicality.... or is it just me being philosophical?

Monty Don

I was very disappointed with the knew programme. I really tried to watch it till the end but I was so bored. I even thought I had the wrong programme on at first as he was admiring painted walls so much. Hope it gets better than this. He could have found better gardens in the UK

I loved it, I didn't know anything about the gardens in Mexico & thought the floating gardens were fascinating & loved the beautiful church & all the gardens he visited (even the 'coloured walls' Jana, not really our idea of gardens but lovely colours against the blue sky & architecturally interesting). They'd struggled to find anything in Cuba but it was great to see how people were being encouraged to grow their own food on little plots of wasteland. O.H. can't stand Monty but I even caught him sneaking a look at the programme whilst pretending to read a book!

I wasn't impressed by the Mexican gardens - well, the floating one was impressive - but the Cuban gardens were just the dogs doodles. It's sort of garden whatever type things in the UK type things but with official approval and those little kiosks - 60 plus in Havana - to sell seeds, give advice etc were just brilliant.

just watched it, it worked for me - the Cuban green spaces are a total inspiration. The non-floating Floating Gardens were also impressive.

WOW,
Who would have thought that Cuba of all places would be world leader in REAL gardening. Its made me think about growing dwarf runner beans "Hestia" in my front garden and perhaps "Rainbow" chard. Where that veg seed catalogue gone?
