Yes things have changed a bit in the last 60 years or so
"Charts" started off with sheet music sales.
Then records, 78s then 45s then cds now you don't even have to buy hard copy you can just down load it on your computer(Ugh!).

There were no charts when I was born so I decided to look up the first single I ever bought. My father bought my sister and I a record player for Xmas (1959) as a consolation prize for not taking us on holiday earlier on in the year. We bought our first single immediately. I remember it as being "Why" by Anthony Newley. But looked at the "GBoHS" and it said 1960. I then realised that that was when it hit the charts and not when it was released.

Incidentally, it was a "Dansette" record player, with a Garrard deck for the afficianado's on the vine. As Garrard were a major local employer at the time these were the most popular players in this area then. I also suspect that knowing my father's preference for not spending any money on his daughters, he probably got it cheap.

I thought there was something funny about this, but couldn't put my finger on it.....

'Kisses for me' was (sadly!) the first single that I bought too, but I remember it as 1976 not 1971, so I've just checked and it was the Eurovision winner 1976..

Um - I remember the dance too....

I feel like a baby now .. I was 14 in '97 So my music choices were the crap pop of the day - boyzone et al.

However I've liked the Police since I was a kid, and now have a diverse taste in music despite leaning towards punk rock

(the mix on my WinAmp at the moment includes T Rex, The Ramones, Against Me!, Foo Fighters, Madness, random folky stuff (reminds me of childhood), REM, etc. A varied mix!)

No1 in the UK charts-Frankie Goes To Hollywood- Two Tribes
No1 in the USA charts- Prince -When Doves Cry

                  Not the worst selection
