  • Bill Oddie I ain't!

Was on the plot at the weekend doing a bit of construction and maintenance when Mavis my bird popped in to say hello as usual.

Anyway, I had my camera so thought I'd get some photographic evidence.

When I talking to one of my plot neighbours he informed me that Mavis, who I thought was a starling, was in fact a female blackbird. How rubbish am I!?

Anyone else made any decent gaffs recently?

p.s. Hazel, thanks for the Word tip!

Well lady blackbird or starling, I think Mavis is very beautiful. Bet it's nice to know you're still attracting gorgeous birds!

She's just like my Wendy. This female 'knocks' on the back door for scraps. She stands on the dorstep looking in pathetically till we feed her. In the breeding season she fills her beak and rushes off to the various shrubs in the garden where she's stashed her young. In the warmer weather if I leave the kitchen door open she will come in. I once found a guano slick down the cupboard under the sink - she must have flown up to sit on the edge of the sink. I love birds - even my demented budgie Primrose!

Mavis looks like a thrush & also the correct name for a song thrush.
The RSPB: Advice: What is a Mavis? Am I right in thinking it is a female song thrush?

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

No wonder the poor bird is confused about what type she is. I've called her Mavis here, when in fact I had dubbed her Mildred originally on my blog!

Maybe I'd read Mavis somewhere whilst typing this post...

            Sorry Mildred!

I checked the RSPB's bird finder and Mildred/Mavis is a young blackbird Wayne. There's also a pic of a thrush on page 68 of the GYO mag.

Well, it's certainly the first time a bird has thrown themselves at my feet (Mildred had a mad minute where she flew about making all sorts of noises and then scuttled across the ground towards my feet, then hid in amongst the sprouts for a bit).

                        I thought Thrush.
I'm sure you're right, but isn't it a bit early for young blackbirds? perhaps she's a teenager though...

She looks just like my Wendy who is at least 3 years old.

                              Mildred'll be a blackbird then.

                              Either that or she's filthy!
