  • Smilies?

I just wondered, are we benefitting anyone in some obtuse way by using smilies?
Are they there purely for decoration? Is it advisable to use them, and why?

I think they help lessen the potential for mis-understanding. Afterall most of us are passionate about our growing - and so it's easy to get a bit carried away, oh argh fnarr fnarr! So some smiley's help I reckon!

Oop except when you put the wrong one....

    MORE smiley's please Mods.

As one of the biggest users of smilies may I say I mainly use them with good intention, but mainly for fun if asked to stop I will only use the ones available on this site.

I say keep them. It's them that make me realise that SBP doesn't in fact have a deep seated hatred of me, and that she's in fact ribbing me good and propper.

I think the smilies are invaluable and wish we had more! I try not to be at all ambiguous with new folk or people I feel I don't know very well but like to make more relaxed posts to the regulars - I find and especially useful for clarifying that I may not be making an entirely serious point.

I love BW's extra smilies too!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

I see little difference between the use and effect of emoticons and words - they are both easily used, and easily taken the wrong way if desired.

People do some funny old things on 'tinternet, and for some very peculiar reasons. You can't legislate for those out to pick a fight or start a wind-up for their own amusement.

It's generally best to attempt to make your point as clear as possible but never to assume that your intention will be understood!!
