  • What on earth is this?

    Hi

I bought thes in the market and was told they were a chinese veg called Chow Chow and can be used in place of chesnuts... I can't find them on Google to check out how to cook/good recipes so think the name I was given was wrong...

    Anyone know what it's called?

Reminds me of the venus flytrap in Little Shop of Horrors!

Hello Shortie, got this from Google. Says Chow Chow is a preserved Chinese fruit. Seems to be used for fruit salad type dishes but don't know if it's the same thing you've got. Have another look on Google

Hi Alice, adding the word fruit after Chow Chow certainly helped, oops and I didn't keep getting dogs this time!

But it looks like chow chow fruit is actually loads of stuff preserved, no the name of that fruit... can you send me a link incase I'm doing my usual naff searching still? Cheers

Shortie, go to above link and it's recipe 2740. Don't think it will be much good to you but may set you off on a trail. Hope it helps.

There are two recipes using Christophene at www.uktvfood.co.uk and one at www.bbc.co.uk/food but if you google Christophene quite a few recipes come up.

You beat me to it LJ, I also know it as a choko and remember growing them as a child. I think we used to cook them and use them like squash - cut in half, remove the seeds and boil or steam till soft.

I just love the education I get here on the vine.
I’ve never seen or heard of this fruit/veg before.

                      Christophene

Try eating christophene raw. It is delicious and a very refreshing snack. Peel, slice as carrot sticks and keep in fridge in cold water until you get the munchies
