Help Needed

Hi all and what a crackin website and mag

I just wondering if any of you experienced growers could help me i was asked if i would be interested in an allotment in december even thought i had never grown anything in my 25years of living so i said why not al give it a go it had been neglected 4 atleast 2years full of colch grass moss and covered in ivy a real state but now its really clean painted the shed cold frame turned all the beds over and covered them..i've got a few things in the frame now garlic...my potatoes chitting in the shed i'am really lookin forward to the coming months even the neighbours have said how good it looks now so its a big booster.......but as i'am new i dont know really what to grow ? i want to grow carrots,cauli's,parsnips,peas,lettuce,cabbage,onions,springs,beets,also as many herbs as i can

i've been buying the gyo mag and the new lets grow veg very helpfull but confusing.....what can i grow near each other and what cant i grow near another? any tips or any info i would be very gratefull...............

And is there any thing i can start off now in the green house or frame?

Congratulations on your new lottie, Just grow the veggies you like and have fun doing it.
I have started my carrots, cauli's, parsnips, peas, cabbage, onioins & leeks off in the greenhouseso far.

if i start of my carrots parnips and so on now should i sow them in moduels then into the greenhouse? i dont have a heater in there though would this be a bad idea without 1? And i think i will start my peas off in some guttering i have untill they germinate?

yes thats what i have mine in and not got any heat on in the greenhouse, so far my cabbage & caulis have germinate. think it took about 2 weeks.

Think its best to wait till the weather improves the ground needs to warm up, my last frost date on the net is may, so best to wait till then, just do your seeds in the greenhouse but not the tender ones like cucumbers & tomatoes they need to be kept in a light warm place like a window sill. good luck and have a fun day tomorrow planting your seeds.

Oh great stuff thanks Gardenplot thats what al be doing 2moro then how long do u think b4 u plant them out side? late march i've checked my last frost on the net and its saying may?

Hi and welcome to the vine. A useful reference book is 'the Vegetable and Herb Expert' by Dr Hessayon. It won't break the bank and gives good basic, easy to follow advice for all your veggies.

Well done with your progress on your lottie. Keep notes of what you plant when and how it does, you can refer back to those in future years. Start by growing things you love to eat, no point growing tons of cabbage if you can't stand the stuff!

welcome to the vine, Write notes on how much you sow and the varieties. Add to these notes over the season.
many times I have thought....how long was that row of carrots last year?
we had to many marrows, how many plants did I have? or
the potatoes we grew last year tasted really good- what variety were they?
So now I keep lots of notes!

welcome from me too, dont worry too much this year about rotation as its 'new' to you and if its 4years since the lottie has been worked i wouldnt have thought there was too much to worry about. Most of all enjoy the fruits of your labours
