Oh dear, I've been a bit upset this morning! Woke up to find two of the panels from my g/h had moved next door. It's one of those 'corrugated plastic' ones where the panes slot into the frame as you build it. Could I get them back in properly? Could I heck Just when I was really struggling with it (and trying really hard not to cry - I couldn't really afford to buy it in the first place and if it gets truly wrecked, there's no way I could replace it) my exH popped his head over the fence and offered to save the day (how curious - one might almost think he spies on me ). He went and made it even worse! Anyway, I propped it all up as best I could and raced off to the DIY shop with the kids to try and find something to fix it with. More trauma, cos I had no idea what to get (never got taught useful stuff like that as a child and was never 'allowed' to do anything that was 'a man's job' when I was married). Finally settled on an exterior No More Nails and some Duck Tape. I've patched it up now and I *think* it'll be ok, except I should probably go out and tape all round every other join as well.

Honestly, having a g/h is more worrying than having kids! Wonder how early in the day it's acceptable to have a stiff gin!?
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Well your ex would have been a damn site more helpful if he had either

    (a) had the kids whilst you hotfooted it to the DIY store (tip for next time, take piccys on your mobile (if you can) then show the chap in the store exactly what the problem is)

    OR

    (b) gone to the DIY store and got the right bits himself if he's that bloody clever.

You have my permission to have a stiff gin at 12.0

Oh bad news Seahorse (about the g/h not the ex/h!) - hope it stays together. I'm sure the g/h will be as rewarding as the kids.

I reckon taping and glueing sounds a good bet - its funny stuff that corrugated plastic. Perhaps you ought to keep an eye out for some thick plastic or stuff they make 'bus shelters' from for emergencies.

Save the gin for a bit later and nip down Lidl (unless you've already been), they've stocked up!

I thought I'd lost the lid of my dalek after last night's winds - not so traumatic but I'd rather have it WITH a lid! It had taken off frisbee style and landed right across the paddock at the end of the garden - a good 100 yards away. It's a miracle it didn't whack the greenhouse on the way (with un-hilarious consequences!)

Hope your glue and tape system is successful.

Thanks everyone I'm feeling much more Pollyanna-like again now. And the repairs are still in place!

I hope you can get yours fixed Litha.

edited to add - Hazel, that's a brilliant tip about taking phone pics and showing the DIY peeps what's needed, I'll remember that for next time!

2 panes gone from mine- and only had 1 spare pane of glass and as it's frost later on in the week we've had to stick some plastic over the gap.
I've got a peach tree in full bloom in there at the moment so it really needs to be frost-free to save the blossom ( 9 panes gone this time last year and we lost all the blossom to frost...and subsequently no peaches)

Well done with your handiwork Seahorse!!

sorry to hear about the damage on your g/h. it's not just the damage itself but the hassle of fixing it, parts don't always come ready-made or do they?

since the last incident when our g/h got blown off the ground, my DH has now put down two concrete slabs over the base of the frame (okay it's only a very narrow area), on each side. So far it seems to be working, though we were worried with the howling wind last night as we could hear the plastic panels on the g/h wobbling away violently.

Went past the lottie this morning while walking the dog, not planning to go in, and noticed a strange flapping noise. We went in to investigate and discovered a rather large rip on the far side of the g/h, the window flapping around & the back panel slowly coming unstuck Had to run home like the blazes to grab the greenhouse tape & spare bits of plastic cover, then back again, & wrestle for ages with the flapping bits to get them stuck down... It's not the prettiest job, but there isn't a single bit loose for the wind to catch (i'm touching wood, I'm touching wood!!), and I even stuck the window down & the door shut!!
Like you Seahorse, if it was to end up trashed there's no way I could afford to replace it, so I'm praying my repairs hold up ok!

my plastic one (g/h) is down and completly out I'm going to have to replace but thankfully those are cheap as potato thingys unlike the ones you guys have.

My dalek lid went for a spin across the runway without (!) seeking ATC permission first

Sorry about your g/h Seahorse ! Hope it is repair now. Got back yesterday and found my cloches all over the garden but I managed to tidy up them all.

I got those mini plastic ones too Piskie, one was torn and the other one is ok. They were weight down with heavy pots and stones.

My mini greenhouse (zipped plastic covered 4 shelf thing) is now a set of 4 shelves and not a greenhouse any more - thanks to the wind whipping the cover off Mary Poppins style at sometime during the night in the howling gales. It is now, i assume, flying somewhere halfway across Nottinghamshire. Thankfully my garlic & blueberry plants were all ok.

We have had the plastic cover from the barbeque fly off and land in the front garden (from our back!) 4 houses down the road. I have also had the lid of the dalek on the plot fly off 4 times to date (the last time it had been weighed down with a MASSIVE rock) so I reckon that may not last past this summer.

But I still had enough faith that we'd be ok to put up a mini-greenhouse (like Newbie's but only 3 shelves) in the back garden. I put a slab from the old patio on the bottom shelf to hold it down - we'll see how long that lasts. (And I did tie the plastic cover to the frame, but I might go and add extra ties this weekend for safety - the neighbours might get really concerned about the things coming from our direction if not....)
